Santorum pulls out of U.S. presidential race

Tue Apr 10, 2012 3:28pm EDT

By Patricia Zengerle

GETTYSBURG, Pennsylvania (Reuters) - U.S. conservative Rick Santorum dropped out of his presidential campaign on Tuesday after falling far behind front-runner Mitt Romney in the race for the Republican nomination.

The former senator from Pennsylvania said he was suspending his campaign, effectively ending his bid to be the Republican who will face President Barack Obama in the November 6 general election.

"We will never be a country that can go forward as a great and powerful country again unless we remember who we are and what makes us Americans. That's what our campaign was about," Santorum said in Gettysburg, near the Civil War battle site.

Santorum was lagging Romney in opinion polls and in the fight for the 1,144 party delegates needed to win the nomination.

In a surprise decision Tuesday, former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Penn.) will announce that he is suspending his presidential campaign, The Huffington Post's Jon Ward has learned and several other outlets have reported.

The Pennsylvania Republican had taken a break from the campaign trail for several days to tend to his ailing daughter, Bella. He had pledged to continue campaigning through the upcoming Pennsylvania primary. But the combination of his daughter's sickness and recent poll numbers showing him possibly losing his home state apparently prompted the early departure.

The announcement is expected to come during an address in Gettysburg, Penn. According to Yahoo! News, Santorum called Mitt Romney earlier in the day to inform him of his decision to suspend his campaign.

Santorum's decision removes any lingering doubt that Romney will end up the Republican presidential nominee. The former Massachusetts Governor held a seemingly insurmountable delegate lead prior to Santorum's departure, though his campaign was planning on spending between one and two million dollars against Santorum in Pennsylvania.

As a volunteer, I work with families coping with neonatal loss. (I do photography for NILMDTS.org) This is one of the conditions for which we are routinely called to the hospital as soon as the mother goes into labor because the survival time is often measured in hours. The median survival time is under a week.

That she has survived more than three years doesn't make coping with the potential that death could come at any time it any easier, but it is an ever present concern that he decided he could cope with both on the campaign trail and as President (had he won).

For every right wing slander thrown at our President, we need to send back double.

When they question President Obama's place of birth, we question how Mitt stole his wealth.

When they level a question about Obama's faith in God, we hit mittens with the cult of mormon.

Bring up the subject of legislation, we go toe to toe.

If they want to use personal attack, we run Romney's face into the mud.

We are at war with these right wingers, and we need to win this one.

Now, he can lose gracefully, and go home and continue to collect his taxpayer-funded lifetime Senate and House pension, limitless family medical insurance benefits, and actually get some idiot to write a book and make some $ on profits from that.

Oh, and any campaign debt, he can erase by 2015 and run again.

For all of these Rethuglicans, it always comes down to money as the bottom line.

But what is the source that he wouldn't take the Constitutionally-mandated Presidential oath. That doesn't appear to be credible information.

Interesting question about what happens in such a situition. Intuition says that that the Vice President (who is always sworn in just before the President) would ascend to the Presidency.

But on the technical side, doesn't the Constitution say words to the effect that you can't perform Presidential duties until after the oath, not that you aren't actually the President?

4) "Who will the Duggars vote for now?"

5) "Who will the Christian Right vote for now?"

Those just off the top of my head. Much better political comics will be hard at work all day writing this stuff up. After the cold open last Saturday Night Live, this week's show will be a Santorum bloodbath. I can only imagine how busy Colbert's and Stewart's writing staffs are today.

I cannot donate my hard earned money to Romney the RINO. If Newt doesn’t get in, my remaining donation will go SarahPac.

The bill for Reagan's Faustian bargain melding the religious crackpots and Wall Street pirates into one entity has finally come due, and destruction is imminent. They need to split into two parties, the Romnians on one side and the Santorumites on the other. Obama will easily win (as he would have anyway), but the faction that gets more votes can lay claim to be the "true" GOP.

There was a ton of pressure on him to get out from GOP establishment.. plus the fact his numbers in PA were not looking good. How embarassing would that be to lose his home state.

He had a chance to win this thing but blew it with his extremist "righteous" comments.

When ever I here a Republican bailing out of an election to "Spend more time with my family" I start looking for the cover up from the scandal that ends their careerer.

Of course that's not the real reason. My guess is he just doesn't want to be embarrassed by losing his home state by double digits--he hurt his marketability at Faux News.

This is only Republican Theater.

This will be a brokered Republican Convention and Marco Rubio will (for sure) be the VP... no matter who is nominated.

Gen David Patreaus will be the nominee for POTUS..... and we will oficially be living in 1932 Germany.

is certainly not following your hysterical ass down the primrose path back to 1948.

Things is, a lot of folks who remembered those times aren't interested in going back--the young ones never went and they're not interested in the shut down society that used to be 1948 America.

Good riddance to bad rubbish. You never should have run in the first place. Go home and finish raising your children.

The religious right are going to have a hard time rallying around Mittens. Thank you, fellow Americans, for not letting this douche win the nomination. Perhaps now we can have nice things.

It's a license to do things in the political realm that is counter to the way things are supposed to be.
