Santorum pulls out of U.S. presidential race

By Patricia Zengerle
GETTYSBURG, Pennsylvania (Reuters) - U.S. conservative Rick Santorum dropped out of his presidential campaign on Tuesday after falling far behind front-runner Mitt Romney in the race for the Republican nomination.
The former senator from Pennsylvania said he was suspending his campaign, effectively ending his bid to be the Republican who will face President Barack Obama in the November 6 general election.
"We will never be a country that can go forward as a great and powerful country again unless we remember who we are and what makes us Americans. That's what our campaign was about," Santorum said in Gettysburg, near the Civil War battle site.
Santorum was lagging Romney in opinion polls and in the fight for the 1,144 party delegates needed to win the nomination.

In a surprise decision Tuesday, former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Penn.) will announce that he is suspending his presidential campaign, The Huffington Post's Jon Ward has learned and several other outlets have reported.
The Pennsylvania Republican had taken a break from the campaign trail for several days to tend to his ailing daughter, Bella. He had pledged to continue campaigning through the upcoming Pennsylvania primary. But the combination of his daughter's sickness and recent poll numbers showing him possibly losing his home state apparently prompted the early departure.
The announcement is expected to come during an address in Gettysburg, Penn. According to Yahoo! News, Santorum called Mitt Romney earlier in the day to inform him of his decision to suspend his campaign.
Santorum's decision removes any lingering doubt that Romney will end up the Republican presidential nominee. The former Massachusetts Governor held a seemingly insurmountable delegate lead prior to Santorum's departure, though his campaign was planning on spending between one and two million dollars against Santorum in Pennsylvania.

(30,244 posts)Color me surprised. He's such a RW fanatic that I thought that he would have gone on until the bitter end. If anything, I thought that Gingrich would have been the one announcing that he was "suspending" his campaign.
Ahhh, those crazy Republicans.

(946 posts)so I think he'll be the next one to bow out. He knows he hasn't a snowball's chance in hell, and ultimately, Newt's a pragmatist, despite his ideological blustering.
Looks like Romney is awarded the brass ring by default. That faint popping sound you hear; wingnut heads exploding. Heh.

(30,244 posts)Loathsome creature that he is. The radio just said that Gingrich is campaining today, (Ron Paul too).
Apparently the media is waiting to hear Santorum speak any minute now. I assume that he's going to say that he's dropping out because of his family (specifically his daughte'r health issues).

It would make sense for both sides but you may well be right that Gingrich's personality wouldn't let him go that route.

(I do photography for NILMDTS.org) This is one of the conditions for which we are routinely called to the hospital as soon as the mother goes into labor because the survival time is often measured in hours. The median survival time is under a week.
That she has survived more than three years doesn't make coping with the potential that death could come at any time it any easier, but it is an ever present concern that he decided he could cope with both on the campaign trail and as President (had he won).

(958 posts)For every right wing slander thrown at our President, we need to send back double.
When they question President Obama's place of birth, we question how Mitt stole his wealth.
When they level a question about Obama's faith in God, we hit mittens with the cult of mormon.
Bring up the subject of legislation, we go toe to toe.
If they want to use personal attack, we run Romney's face into the mud.
We are at war with these right wingers, and we need to win this one.

(535 posts)he has the latest polls, showing that he would have lost to Romney in PA.
Now, he can lose gracefully, and go home and continue to collect his taxpayer-funded lifetime Senate and House pension, limitless family medical insurance benefits, and actually get some idiot to write a book and make some $ on profits from that.
Oh, and any campaign debt, he can erase by 2015 and run again.
For all of these Rethuglicans, it always comes down to money as the bottom line.

(95,337 posts)Santorum wasn't doing this to win presidency. He was doing this to increase his name recognition so he can get the big book deals and lecture money. And I'm sure there will be a SantorumPAC coming soon which will bring in the big bucks and allow him to setup a big salary for himself.

Because there are no religious tests for office, including a willingness to take an oath, a new President would be allowed to make an affirmation, instead.

(3,940 posts)big deal taking it?
But what is the source that he wouldn't take the Constitutionally-mandated Presidential oath. That doesn't appear to be credible information.
Interesting question about what happens in such a situition. Intuition says that that the Vice President (who is always sworn in just before the President) would ascend to the Presidency.
But on the technical side, doesn't the Constitution say words to the effect that you can't perform Presidential duties until after the oath, not that you aren't actually the President?
Politics aside, I wish only the best for his daughter

(1,132 posts)I'm not sure if anyone has used these lines yet, and not with too much sarcasm either:
1) "Remember, Santorum was trailing all the Republican candidates before Iowa..."
2) "It's a miracle he got this far; he didn't have a prayer in December."
3) "I suppose winning his home state was just too big an obstacle to overcome..."
4) "Who will the Duggars vote for now?"
5) "Who will the Christian Right vote for now?"
Those just off the top of my head. Much better political comics will be hard at work all day writing this stuff up. After the cold open last Saturday Night Live, this week's show will be a Santorum bloodbath. I can only imagine how busy Colbert's and Stewart's writing staffs are today.

(4,711 posts)The bill for Reagan's Faustian bargain melding the religious crackpots and Wall Street pirates into one entity has finally come due, and destruction is imminent. They need to split into two parties, the Romnians on one side and the Santorumites on the other. Obama will easily win (as he would have anyway), but the faction that gets more votes can lay claim to be the "true" GOP.
