Rush Limbaugh Threatens To Sue Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee

Radio host Rush Limbaugh has threatened to sue the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) for defamation, The Daily Caller has learned.
Limbaugh retained the services of lawyer Patty Glaser and demanded that the DCCC preserve all records in anticipation of a lawsuit for defamation and interference after the Democratic Party group led a campaign against Limbaugh based on out-of-context statements the host made about sexual assault. Limbaughs legal team delivered a letter to DCCC representatives Monday informing them of the legal threat. Limbaugh has also demanded a public retraction and apology. The Limbaugh team is currently proceeding from the standpoint of litigating and has not yet made a decision as to whether the DCCC could make any concessions at this point to prevent the lawsuit.
The DCCC has intentionally disseminated demonstrably false statements concerning Rush Limbaugh in a concerted effort to harm Mr. Limbaugh, and with reckless disregard for the resulting impact to small businesses across America that choose to advertise on his radio program according to the GlaserWeil law firms letter to the DCCC, which was obtained by TheDC. Mr. Limbaugh clearly, unambiguously, and emphatically condemned the notion that no means yes. Lets be clear: Rush Limbaugh is advocating for the tolerance of rape the DCCC stated in a September fundraising email after Limbaugh mocked Ohio States new mandatory sexual consent guidelines.
Limbaughs team said that the DCCCs campaign against Limbaugh provides grounds for a defamation case, based on legal precedent.
The DCCC may believe it to be immune from liability by quoting words, taken out of context. This is untrue, Glaser said. There is significant on point precedent in the 9th Circuit for holding an organization responsible for falsifying meaning through selective quoting. In Price v. Stossel, the court held that, if a party accurately quotes a statement actually made by a public figure, but presents the statement in a misleading context, thereby changing the viewers understanding of the speakers words, that constitutes defamation.

He has been for 40 years, and he hasn't changed one bit.

(31,464 posts)That makes me "testy" because you don't agree with me? This was a big story when it happened, and anyone who is actually in tune with politics knows the answer: Limbaugh was busted for bottles of Viagra, flying with a group of men on a trip to a know child sex-trafficking area. But otherwise, why should we impugn his integrity as a broadcaster?
Testy one, aren't you?

(113,038 posts)Apparently you want to pretend that you don't know why so many rich American men go to Dominican Republic on arranged sex tours.
Go ahead - I don't play the, "Now, now, let's not describe the Republicans so accurately" game.
You are welcome to play it, though.
"The Dominican Republic is a source, transit, and destination country for men, women, and children subjected to sex trafficking and forced labor. Reports indicate that Dominican women and children are subjected to sex trafficking throughout the Dominican Republic, the Caribbean, Europe, South America, the Middle East, and the United States. Additionally, child sex tourism is a problem, particularly in coastal resort areas of the Dominican Republic, with child sex tourists arriving year-round from the United States and European countries."

You shouldn't get to post stuff here as evidence just because it COULD be true and not get called on it just because the target is someone we don't like. (16,113 posts)While he may very well be, I'd like to think we set a higher bar on the DU (even for the likes of Limbaugh) than:
Viagra + travels to the DR = "serial child rapist"
That's the sort of logic I'd expect from Limbaugh himself. There's a lot of reasons why we hate Limbaugh, and we shouldn't embrace ANY of his tactics just because he's the target.

(101,295 posts)His own transcript, if you can bear to go to his site: http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2014/09/15/espn_analyst_we_must_reprogram_men
"You have to be sober, not coerced, imaginative, enthusiastic, creative, wanted, informed, mutual, honest, verbal. The absence of 'no' does not mean 'yes.' It must be asked every step of the way. It cannot be implied or assumed, even in the context of a relationship. Circumstances in which a person CANNOT legally give consent: (No matter what he or she might verbalize): The person is severely intoxicated or unconscious as a result of alcohol or drugs. The person is physically or developmentally disabled. The victim is under the age 13 or is elderly. So as long as the girl is thirteen years old, she can give consent for sex, provided it's creative and enthusiastic."
"Consent must be freely given, can be withdrawn at any time, and the absence of 'no' does not mean 'yes.'" How many of you guys, in your own experience with women, have learned that "no" means "yes" if you know how to spot it? Let me tell you something. In this modern world, that is simply not tolerated. People aren't even gonna try to understand that one. I mean, it used to be said it was a cliche. It used to be part of the advice young boys were given.
The context if clearly either sex or 'making out' - so that's rape or sexual assault, without consent. When he says '"no" means "yes" if you know how to spot it', but that the modern world doesn't tolerate that claim, he is advocating the tolerance of rape. But then, he would. He needs to fool himself about consent to get to sleep at night.

(63 posts)See, when Democrats fight hard, even dirty if you will then we're "just like them" and should be above it.
Unfortunately, few seem willing to address the Republicans and their tactics. We can't count on the MSM anymore as they KNOW if they go after Republicans they're going to be slandered or harrassed into submission or unemployment. Plus lose KOCH advertising money. It's all about profits, which is the problem.
I am not surprised at Limbaugh's threat of a lawsuit, and no longer surprised that Democrats can't deal with it. Know why? Money that's why. Because if Dems truly fight back, they'l be challenging the system and be cut out of it.
Amazing when the attack adds of the 2014 midterms alone had little bearing on reality, not held to any standard of truth and if my observations were correct Republicans were much less truthful than Democrats, yet we're supposed to play nice and fair.
We have a structural problem and it is deep.
Our leaders do seem to care about us, and will fight as long as it doesn't risk their fortunes. Our side uses reason and logic to debate because we're wired that way, and because of being wired that way also tend to be more educated and thus see the big picture better.
Republicans are wired for authority, fear and thus need a SkyDaddy and corporate daddy, a "job creator" (ta da!) - to feel safe with and that justifies any tactic necessary to maintain order. Slavery okay, slave wages, okay, mass extinctions okay just make me feel good about myself and pass the Kentucky Bourbon.
It hit me like a ton of bricks on Tuesday - and I feel like Winston Smith just before he took a bullet in the head. I must be the one who's crazy.
Why do I feel that way? Because the party that is supposed to be for the average American sold out to the oligarchs and now we have too big to fail, health ins. companies who care about profits not actually providing their services but Jesus loves us and we're pro-life. As long as you can pay our fees, and oh by the way, before you go under the knife for cancer surgery, sign this document. No? Okay then we can't cut that tumor out until you do. But we care about you, we do.
Banks who knowingly sold bad mortgages because they are insured either way, and then, THEN they are too big to fail so they knew they would be bailed out. It's win, win win for the oligarchs and then of course the profit motive means they don't have any social responsibility.
It's the fucking system guys, and we're fucked.
I thought it would be Republicans who would disappear but like Winston Smith, I realize I am wrong.
It may be the Democratic Party. Why? Because they're educated base - guys like you and me know the game is rigged and that no matter how much money, how many doors are knocked upon, or how many votes are cast - until corruption and money are removed from the system, we're just tinkering around the edges of a failed system. Oh an better hurry because climate change is wrecking havoc around the world.
If the system allows too big to fail, gerrymandering, lobbyists, dark money, media profits mightily from dark money advertising, banks too big to fail, private prisons "guaranteed" 90% occupancy rates from some state governments, housing costs so high there's no room for profits, only equity now. That's if you're lucky to keep a job long enough to pay down on the principle.
Hey no guarantees in a market based system. Except for the gun manufacturers, Wall St. ACA health ins. co's, Congress, Credit Card co's and on and on. They demand certainty and we can barely sue them anymore, did you know that?
The Democratic party is at a cross roads, they can either try to break up the banks, fight for single payer, affordable if not free education and to stop the fucking collapse of the eco-system and then have a chance, and only a chance.
Or they can triangulate, appease the money and lose their educated motivated base.
It's the system people - and we're finally starting to get it, and that is why many of us have that sinking feeling, that sober desperation of reality that until money is out of the political system we're indentured servants perpetually in debt, and three payments away from homelessness.
Rush Limbaugh threatened to sue. Of course he did. Some liberals worry that we're down in the mud with him. Of course they do.
And while all this happens, we have lost the Fairness Doctrine, Glass Steagall, don't enforce Sherman Anti-Trust Laws, reward Wall St. for utter failure, allow the influence of lobbyists in D.C. voter suppression, gerrymandering and allow the Koch Brothers to buy every second of ad time available, then run out and out lies against us.
But hey, knock on more doors, give more money and Hillary! Yay! She didn't really mean it when she was just paid $250,000 three weeks or so ago in a closed door meeting with Wall St. execs, telling them "you are being picked on". She didn't mean it when she voted for the credit card bankrupt bill. Honest, she'll 'revisit" it once she's won. Honest. Yay!
Its the fucking rigged system stupid, and we're skull fucked into submission.
Marching? We did that and they simply ignore us. Vote, doesn't matter we have to face reality and compromise and notice how the compromises always, ALWAYS reward the big money guys these days? The ACA as better as it is, and it is better than before has just required us to buy from private health care cos! Yay Democrats!
It is money in politics and the people that make the rules take the money. Think they're going to change that? Sure, and the banks will be grateful for American taxpayers bailing them out. Sure.
Its the system guys, and the Democrats are supposed to be keepers of the light. We know Republicans won't, hell - they tell us, not to mention their records.
So someone please, please tell me in 2020, after we have won the Presidency and maybe even taken the senate back, that this time, this time they'll be better. No they won't they'll continue to institutionalize corporations where they're part of the government and even too bigger to fail.
Rush Limbaugh, the DLCC, the DCCC, Republicans, Democrats are all now, all now in the pockets of the oligarchs.
Until someone says to me, I want to break up the banks, take profits out of schools, prisons, health care and save the planet I won't believe a word they say.
Oh wait, but Bill Clinton will campaign for us, and but that time we might even allow Barack Obama back in the game. Can't have that now, because he actually, just slightly went against the system and look what happened. He's political toast.
I get Winston Smith and it's the fucking system stupid.
Yes, Rush Limbaugh warned the DCCC.
Rush will use it to make money from his "followers" and the DCCC will ask for money from it's "members" to combat it and guess who'll win.
Rush, the DCCC the lawyers and the oligarchs.

(7,759 posts)It now appears that Rush is confidentially in charge of the GOP since he has all but ordered them but confessed that the GOP was not elected to "govern" but they were elected to "stop Obama." And this is exactly what it appears that the GOP is doing, is willing to do, and will continue to do. Meanwhile the position of Surgeon General is vacant and can't get thru Congress...a position that would put in place a medical professional who could coordinate and oversee the Ebola situation and any other infectious disease confronting the nation; the AG position will languish jeopardizing any movement on the banisters and on civil rights issues, especially voter suppression. The immigration legislation passed by the Senate and sent to the House months ago will be stalled just because they don't want to move on anything Obama proposes. Jobs, a crumbling infrastructure, important FCC decisions, and other important governing actions will languish at the feet of the GOP. Where are the Dems to make this clear to the public and the media.
