We've had several incidents recently where radicalized Canadian born people have left to go and fight for ISIS. We had two people try to bomb the BC legislature during Canada Day celebrations last year. There was another plot a couple of years ago to storm parliament hill. And then we had another radical run down two soldiers in Quebec the day before last, killing one.

But yes, I get the significance of where it took place. This may be a terrorist act or just a nut job copy cat of another killing of a military man a couple days earlier. I imagine the investigation will need some time to confirm this, since the guy isn't talking.

is more shocking than the average shooting.

The Sergeant at Arms of Parliament is apparently the one that downed the shooter inside Parliament - this guy literally was trying to attack Canada. Apparently in Canada it's not just a ceremonial position!!!

No, this would be very, very shocking in the US. It's not like it's a mall shooting. It's a political assault. And it comes after the attack on soldiers just a few days ago.

Gunman, a recent convert to Islam, dead after Canadian soldier Nathan Cirillo killed at Ottawa war memorial

A long-haired man wielding a double-barreled shotgun brought terror to Canada’s capital Wednesday, paralyzing Parliament with a wild shootout after killing a young soldier — the second time this week the nation lost a military member to a suspected terrorist...

The chaos was believed to have been the work of a lone shooter identified by U.S. law enforcement sources as Michael Joseph Hall, a recent convert to Islam who was using the name Michael Zehaf-Bibeau. A friend of the killer described him as “erratic” and possibly “mentally ill” to a Canadian paper, but cops didn't immediately rule out an accomplice...

Zehaf-Bibeau, 32, reportedly came from a wealthy Montreal home and enjoyed a privileged childhood. His mother is a federal official in Canada’s immigration bureau. She divorced his father, a businessman, in 1999. But in recent years Zehaf-Bibeau racked up several drug arrests and The Globe and Mail newspaper reported he was designated a “high-risk traveler” by the Canadian government and had his passport seized...

The attack came weeks after Harper authorized air strikes against the murderous Islamic State militants who have gobbled up swaths of Iraqi and Syrian territory. And it happened just days after two Canadian armed forces members were hit outside Montreal by a car driven by another recent Muslim convert named Martin Rouleau. One soldier died.

Rouleau, 25, killed by police after a car chase, had changed his name to Ahmed Rouleau. Canadian authorities had confiscated his passport and he was among 90 people being tracked on suspicion of taking part in militant activities abroad or planning to do so. It’s not known if Zehaf-Bibeau was part of that group...

Can't get the pictures to post but they are good ones of the people, the scene and the area. It has the video I posted earlier on this thread. Both were troubled men. Very sorry for the people killed by them and their families. Not sure how Canadians will react to these events.

Oct 2014

and we all know which came first.

Reports have it the gunman had a long gun. Who knows if he was able to get one either because of Harper's junking of the long gun registry, or if he was able to get an illegal gun because, well, we share a border with the US and because of the sheer number of guns, some make it over the border. Either way, it was a gun that started it. If not for that, there would be no need for a gun to finish it. Besides, it's sheer luck (or perhaps skill of the sergeant at arms) no one was hurt in the cross fire.

There are millions of legally owned hunting rifles and shotguns.

Most firearms are subject to magazine capacity limits (generally 3-5 rounds), but you can legally own semi-auto rifles with high-capacity magazines if you know which combo of magazines and rifle to purchase due to various loopholes:
