Hurricane Gonzalo blacks out most of Bermuda

Source: BBC NEWS World

Hurricane Gonzalo has roared through Bermuda, cutting power to most of its inhabitants and threatening floods.

Emergency services are waiting for daybreak to assess the full damage wreaked by the second powerful storm to strike the island in less than a week.

Strong winds and heavy surf continued after the eye of the hurricane moved north into the Atlantic, and tidal surges are still possible.Top wind speeds of about 175km/h (110mph) were reported.

Bermuda, an affluent British overseas territory in the western Atlantic, frequently sees strong tropical storms.
Just days ago, Tropical Storm Fay damaged homes and knocked down trees and power lines on the island.

"To be struck twice by two different cyclones is unusual, to say the least," said Max Mayfield, a former director of the US National Hurricane Center in Miami.

The double-wammy is bad and I believe that Gonzalo had reached cat 4 at one point.

From the article is sounds like they have a lot of them and the buildings are all up to standards.. but, one right after another this time!

I just heard a rush of rain outside my window like Ana is in the neighborhood or maybe it's just a high wind and rain preview!

as Ana passes and you dodge that bullet Cha!

Here in Philly, we usually get the windy/rainy remnants of hurricanes and tropical storms but the aftermath of Hurricane/Super Storm Sandy in 2012 did a number on my area. There was a line of 10 large old street trees (Sycamores) up the street from me and Sandy took out about 6 of them right down a row (they dominoed down the line). This past awful winter of 2013 - 2014 (2nd worst on record) sealed the fate of the remaining 4.

Mother Nature will definitely let you know who is in charge.

7. We were right under the path of Sandy

and Philly is about 60 miles NW of Atlantic City near where it entered

The storm was so huge that it literally stretched from Maine to Florida.

And then you had it change from tropical to subtropical (as a Nor'easter) at landfall, and since it was near the end of the hurricane season in late October, as it came further inland, it became a snow storm in the higher elevations of PA and WV. Add to this that it was around the time of a full moon and all hell broke out.

Needless to say, since it happened just before Halloween, most of the Halloween activities were canceled and rescheduled for the following week. Sandy ended up being 2nd behind Katrina in terms of costs from damage (the worst of it on the coast and on the NE side of the eye up into NYC).

9. Thank you for that, BRDS.. Huge Wide Long Swath of a Super Storm! Dawg!

These storms/hurricanes love the Full Moon.. which is what was going on with Iniki but with these storms/hurricanes/cyclones(some reports were calling them).. in the Pacific and Hurricane Fay and Gonzalo in The Atlantic/Bermuda the Moon is quite a bit smaller.

The Sun is shining outside now and it's warm.. last night rain storm gone. The news is saying Hurricane Ana weakens but we are to remain vigilant. So, that seems to be good news.

"The storm, with sustained winds of up to 80 mph, was hovering 160 miles south of Kauai and 140 miles south of Niihau in the Hawaiian Islands as of 8:30 a.m. local time, according to a statement issued by the National Weather Service. Winds reached 85 mph earlier in the morning.

Tropical storm warnings remained in effect for Oahu, Kauai County and the island of Niihau, the agency said. A flash flood warning also remained in effect for the Big Island through 6 p.m. Saturday, and for all other islands through Sunday night, the agency said."

You wouldn't know it by looking outside now.. but, you know the weather it can change fast!
