Arizona gay marriage legal; couples to marry immediately

Source: Arizona Republic

Arizona same-sex couples can begin marrying immediately, after Attorney General Tom Horne announced this morning he will not appeal the court ruling striking down Arizona's marriage restriction.

Horne said legal ethics dictated he drop any appeal of the 9th Circuit court's ruling.

Horne has issued a letter instructing county clerks to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples immediately.

My college roommate in Arizona came out of the closet in 1983. He met up with another guy, they partnered, had a child together with one of their sperm and a surrogate mother. They raised the kid, "colleged" the kid and sent him out into the world - all in Arizona. The kid (man) is now in his late 20's and practicing law in Oregon or Washington state (can't recall which).

The courage and determination of these men was/is impressive and inspiring.

Although this marriage ruling comes out too late for them, they were trailblazers in the area of families with gay parents. Their determination to be an out family in the Reagan era contributed to the environment of gay acceptance we see today - a level of acceptance that's fueling this wave of equality being bestowed upon the LGBT community (though not fast enough, in my opinion).

I support this strongly. I send my best wishes to gay couples in Arizona wishing to be in it for life. The world just got a teeny bit more civilized.
