Conn. on track to be 17th state sans death penalty

Source: AP

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The state Senate voted Thursday voted to abolish the death penalty in Connecticut, a state that has executed only one prisoner in a half-century and is now on track to join a national trend away from capital punishment.

In an early morning vote that followed more than 10 hours of debate, the Senate approved legislation that would set life imprisonment as the maximum punishment for all future cases. The bill, which has the support of the state's Democratic governor, now goes to the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives, where it's expected to win approval.

In the last five years, four other states have abolished the death penalty — New Mexico, Illinois, New Jersey and New York. Connecticut would become the 17th state without a death penalty.

Repeal proposals are also pending in several other states including Kansas and Kentucky, while advocates in California have gathered enough signatures for an initiative to throw out the death penalty that is expected to go before voters in November.

involved an sadistic serial killer (Michael Ross) that had to beg the system to kill him.

Other than an outlet for revenge the death penalty is such a waste of time and money. Even revenge is a stupid excuse to keep it going, the inmate basically falls asleep.

Another state stands poised to join the civilized world in ending the death penalty. Then CT won't be keeping company with the redneck pro-death penalty crowd that we have here in Florida.

In the US we have other effective ways to defend society such as life sentences without parole in secure facilities.

has never been proven to be a deterrent. If it were, there would be no murders.

It's basically a means of revenge, and beneath what should be the acts of a civilized society.

I'm so glad my state is going to abolish it.

I could see capital punishment abolished in Kansas. The last executions took place in the mid-1960s:

Lowell Lee Andrews, November 30, 1962
Perry Smith, April 14, 1965 (Murderer of Clutter family, November 15, 1959, along with Richard Hickock- see In Cold Blood)
Richard Hickock, April 14, 1965
George York, June 22, 1965
James Latham, June 22, 1965

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_executed_in_Kansas

Andrews was named "the nicest boy in Wolcott"--until he killed his parents and sister.
Smith and Hickock were the killers of the Clutter family of Holcomb
York and Latham were army deserters who went on a multi-state killing spree.

All were hanged. However, there has been no executions since 1965 so I would imagine Kansas will abolish capital punishment.
