NOW (The National Organization for Women) calls for Roger Goodell to step down as NFL commissioner

Source: CBS

The National Organization for Women called for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to step down on Monday, saying in a statement the league "has lost its way."

They are not the first to question Goodell's ability to helm America's wealthiest and most popular sports league in the wake of the video released showing former star running back Ray Rice punching and knocking out his then-fiancee Janay Palmer.

"The NFL sets the example for college, high school, middle school and even elementary school football programs. And the example it is setting right now is simply unacceptable," said NOW in a statement.

...

"The only workable solution is for Roger Goodell to resign, and for his successor to appoint an independent investigator with full authority to gather factual data about domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking within the NFL community, and to recommend real and lasting reforms," the NOW statement said.

They've kept this quiet for nearly 6 months? Whomever is running that ship needs to be fired.

They stage gladiator fights for 22 weeks/year to the tune of 9 billion dollars. Their retirees are crippled, addled, broke and addicted, and the NFL as an entity does everything it can to NOT ease their suffering. The Rice incident is horrific but not an anomaly.

To ban the sport of "Football" if you have your way. Geez, it is one thing to condemn the deplorable and inexcusable actions taken by Ray Rice, but it is another thing to indict an entire sport as a useless endavour devoid of any actual recognition.

I enjoy nfl games. And even if I didn't, it's not going anywhere. There is far too much money involved for the ptb to let it disappear. But it's just a capitalist endeavor and as such the workers are treated like shit during and after their service.

Sending him to jail for felony assault would have removed the onus from the NFL. While I agree that Goodell needs to get the boot, sounds like this cover-up goes way past him.

sounds like the authorities had the video, and gave it to Goodell instead of apprehending Rice. That seems wrongheaded.

He should only step down if he lied. If he just failed to request the video, or if he failed to look at the video he should not step down. I guess he could have handled the situation better, but I do not think he should have to step down because of his handling of this situation unless he lied about the hotel video tape.

I am one of the people who thinks Ray Rice did not need to be suspended for the entire NFL season. I also did not think Rice should be permanently kicked out of the NFL. So I think Roger Goodell handled the situation fairly well. He suspended Rice for two games, which was going to cost him more than $500,000. $500,000 is not chump change.

That's a powerful coalition against Mr. Goodell.

It would be nice if we can build a coalition like that against the Koch brothers.
