Poll: McConnell leads Grimes by 4 points
Source: The Hill
A new poll shows Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) widening his lead over his Democratic opponent, the second time the Bluegrass Poll has had the Republican ahead.
With just two months away from the midterm election, the poll released Saturday found that McConnell would get 46 percent of likely voters, compared with Grimess 42 percent, the Courier Journal reported.
The poll was conducted earlier this week by SurveyUSA on behalf of the Courier-Journal and three other news outlets.
Grimes had led in Bluegrass Polls up until the one a month ago, in which McConnell opened a two-point lead. Saturdays poll is the third consecutive time McConnells chances have improved over Grimes, Kentuckys secretary of state.

(92,131 posts)addition, I wonder if mcconnell's finance scandal, and his koch brothers secret meeting has had time to absorb into the numbers completely yet?

(1,091 posts)Democrats have held the Governor's office for 40 years - with 2 exceptions. But the GOP has the State Senate (won it about 10 years ago) and is threatening to take the House. But to show you the problem, one of the Governors was a Republican growing up in Virginia. Met his wife in college there. She was from a family involved in the thoroughbred horse industry and was told - you register as a Democrat in you want any influence. And he did. Brereton Jones is his name.
We voted both times for Clinton but both times against Obama.
The poster above is correct about coal - big time factor. It beat Chandler (US Rep from the Lexington area - center Left politically) even though there are no coal mines in his district (but a lot of the voters have connections in Eastern KY).
Mitch is losing his marbles. One of the sad things about growing old.

There are plenty of reasons for remaining optimistic about the Kentucky senate race!

(5,754 posts)Folks are afraid to lose their jobs in coal mining. They don't realize that all of the oil and natural gas coming from fracking and oil shale will kill those jobs anyway. They are voting to shut down the government again. I think Obama should close some of the military bases in Kentucky when that happens. Maybe Ft. Campbell?
IronGate
(2,186 posts)only the Congress can by way of funding and I suspect that Ft. Campbell will never be on the chopping block and to suggest that he do so, is, IMO, stupid, think of all the civilian jobs that would be lost.

(6,994 posts)that a poll conducted with less than 1000-1500 people is just a poll to give the media something to report.
CNN Faux and all the other right wing corporate media outlets are just waiting for this kind of poll reporting so they can jump on it and make it sound as if this election in Kentucky is over. Just wait till Todd oh whats his face gets this info on his morning MSBC bullshit session.
So in other words agreed..The poll is BS and give Repukes bragging right for a day or so.

Be cautious in believing poll numbers as they too are "gerrymandered" in order to get a desired outcome--in Hopes of Depressing turnout-I mean, what's the point of voting when Your candidate is lagging behind and the polls tell us the opponent is Favored to win?

(94,501 posts)is that, after 30 years in office, McConnell is at 46%. He's not going to attract NEW voters at this point, so there's an opportunity for Grimes to get the undecided votes.

(7,402 posts)For whatever reason it seems to work. It is part of the messaging that ISIS will soon strike in America. Just listen to the fears being expressed about people with American passports training with ISIS where they will return to American shores with WMD. Accordingly, ISIS is a political problem for Democrats and this poll is showing that. The funny part is that the stock market, which factors in many imaginary things, has not had a negative response to an ISIS threat. That should tell you all that you need to know about the threat.

(140 posts)I wish his opponent would emphasize how McConnell opposes anything proposed by Obama especially if it helps the average person, but assures the wealthy that he will protect them. He is the epitome of what most people dislike about our Congress - they don't do anything to make life better for the people. He is the ultimate obstructionist declaring that his primary goal was to defeat Obama, not to solve any of our social or economic problems. We need to say NO! To Senator NO.

(3,165 posts)From the electoral-vote.com site:
"SurveyUSA has released a new poll showing Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) leading secretary of state Alison Lundergan Grimes 46% to 42%. However, since the poll was taken, two events have happened that could affect the race. First, McConnell was caught on tape talking to the Koch brothers and promising them that as majority leader he would block everything Obama wanted to do in the last 2 years of his term. Second, McConnell's campaign manager, Jesse Benton, resigned yesterday amidst a scandal in which the Ron Paul campaign (which Benton ran) bribed an Iowa state senator for his endorsement in 2012. While McConnell was not involved in the bribe in any way, Grimes is surely going to run ads effectively saying: "The old boys club is corrupt and we need to send new people to Washington to clean up the mess."

(823 posts)While we should definitely fight to the end, we should not be delusional either. Winning in Kentucky will be very difficult, will take everything to fall our way. Kentucky is innately deep red, and we should factor in that a Republican has a built in huge as advantage that polls tend to underestimate.

(12,541 posts)in states where the voters are easily duped the Democrat needs at least a five point lead in the polls on election day. Otherwise, there is a plausible factor that the polls were off. Look at how Max Cleland lost in Georgia.
