Florida judge approves new map for Congress
By GARY FINEOUT, Associated Press | August 22, 2014 | Updated: August 22, 2014 3:19pm

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida judge is giving his approval to a new congressional map that was redrawn by state legislators — but it won't take effect in time for this year's election.

Circuit Judge Terry Lewis on Friday said voters will pick members of Congress in November based on a map he declared invalid back in July. Lewis opted against calling a special election based on the new map.

State legislators earlier this month altered seven of 27 congressional districts after Lewis ruled the districts had been illegally drawn to benefit Republicans.

Lewis' ruling is a victory for the GOP-controlled Legislature, but it also means the legal battle could continue.

I just dont know why more Americans are not outraged that every single new voting law hurts minorities ability to vote, and students, and old people.

I thought we were all patriotic?

Some voting laws hurt minorities. But could you explain to me how making early voting a few days shorter hurts students more then people working 40 - 60 hours a week? In fact, I'm not sure how any voting law hurts students.

Didnt say it hurt students more, but when the state accepts hunting licenses and not university id's, for insance

the voting ID requirements are unconstitutional in the first place

What states do that? Makes no sense for a state to do that. However, college kids can find numerous ways to get beer before they are 21 but are not clever enough to get an id to vote. Really? The problem isn't getting the id, the problem is they don't really care to get one, voting isn't that important to them.
Are you suggesting that we should not have to show any id to vote? Just go in, vote, and leave?

Showing an ID to vote is unconstitutional...you have to show id to register to vote

VOTER ID LAWS exist SOLELY to prevent certain Americans from voting, who almost always vote for Democrats

You are saying that I could refuse to show my id and still vote? I've always had to show (or thought I had to show) some id. Put me on a learning curve here. How would they know I'm the registered voter if I don't show id?
I should have figured it would be Texas that does the hunting license thing. Probably makes the NRA happy and some politicians wealthy.

13. Yes, but drinking beer is not a Constitutional Right

Maybe it should be, but it's not.

Tell my 86 year old mother who has voted in every election since FDR, and has no photo ID that she can't vote...I dare you!

Anyway, you know full well that these restrictions have nothing to do with "voter fraud", and EVERYTHING TO DO WITH PREVENTING CERTAIN AMERICANS FROM VOTING

You know that, no matter how "tongue in cheek" you may be about beer and students, and since you know that, you should feel ashamed of yourself.

Why do you hate "Merika"??

I doubt if I would tell your mother anything. But I never said you needed a photo id to vote, or should. I said I thought you had to show id to vote. In my case they always asked for a drivers license. My question was if you had NO id what would they do? I never said that restrictions had to do with voter fraud.
However, I will stand by my opinion that the reason most students (or young adults generally) don't vote is because they don't want to - apathy. Not because of "restrictions." If you told them they could get a free ticket to the concert of their choice you would have close to 100% of them at the polls, in line, with id. Real world - students were excited about candidate Obama and they voted in record numbers.

They may have gerrymandered districts but they like them because they guarantee wins for them.

You can still gerrymander with watershed districts (e.g. upper watershed, lower, east, west, etc) but not as much.

Great idea also b/c people in a district are more likely to get involved in water quality and quantity issues
