Community leaders ask Open Carry advocates to stay away from Fifth Ward

The day Open Carry Texas had been scheduled to march through the Fifth Ward, community leaders gathered to send them a message: Thanks for postponing, don't bother rescheduling.

The group, which advocates for the right to carry weapons openly, had planned to march Saturday through the heart of the Fifth Ward, a historically black neighborhood, but postponed the event after an outcry by local residents.

U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Houston, questioned the group's motives, arguing that the neighborhood was being used as a pawn in Open Carry's lobbying efforts.

"Carrying an AR-15 is not in any way a message for young men in this community," she said.
