Joe Walsh actually said this...

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Skinner (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: Chicago Magazine

The subject turns to Duckworth, the Black Hawk pilot who lost her legs and part of the use of right arm after her helicopter was hit in 2004 by a rocket-propelled grenade. She recovered to run unsuccessfully for Congress, and then to serve as Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs, as well as President Obama’s Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Catanese writes:

“I have so much respect for what she did in the fact that she sacrificed her body for this country,” said Walsh, simultaneously lowering his voice as he leaned forward before pausing for dramatic effect. “Ehhh. Now let’s move on.”

“What else has she done? Female, wounded veteran … ehhh,” he continued. “She is nothing more than a handpicked Washington bureaucrat. David Axelrod, Rahm Emanuel just picked her up and dropped her into this district.”

The last line, especially, with its image of the legless Duckworth being dropped from the air “into district” struck me as beyond tasteless. As of post time, a few commenters blasted Walsh on charges by his ex-wife that he owes her $117,437 in child support payments, but none had remarked on his insensitive statements about Duckworth. I called Duckworth’s campaign manager for a response from the candidate, as well as Walsh’s press secretary to ask the congressman for further clarification of his remarks. Neither has responded by post time.

2. Besides her work for wounded vets @ the V.A. Tammy has done:

Since her recovery at Walter Reed, Duckworth has dedicated her life to public service, advocating on behalf of disability rights and Veterans. In 2006, Duckworth was the Democratic Candidate for Illinois’ 6th Congressional District. In 2007, she received the Hubert H. Humphrey Civil Rights Award and was named the 2008 Disabled Veteran of the Year by the Disabled American Veterans. In 2008, she was selected by Candidate Obama to deliver the presidential campaign’s key address on Veterans’ rights at the Democratic National Convention. In 2009, she was named as an American Veterans (AMVETS) Silver Helmet award recipient as well as The George Washington University’s Colin Powell Public Service Award Recipient.

Duckworth served as a manager for Rotary International’s Asia Pacific Region. She speaks fluent Thai and Indonesian and is a published author on the health risks of environmental radon and lung cancer. She has declined her Army medical retirement to continue her service in the National Guard. In 2008 and 2009, she completed the Chicago Marathon, fulfilling a promise made at Walter Reed. She has also resumed flying as a civilian pilot.

12. Yes you might be off on that.

President Obama did not serve any terms as a US representative he lost that election. President Obama did run for and serve as a US Senator.

Welcome to DU and I hope you enjoy what I am sure is to be a short stay.

19. I had to leave the computer after reading this.

It really hit me badly, as a female Vet and someone with friends who have been deployed. I am typing and becoming sadder and teary with each word. This is a disgrace that heroes are treated with such disdain by such trash.

8. What's the difference between Joe Walsh and a KFC bucket of extra crispy fried chicken?

Only the bucket ACTUALLY feeds a family of four.

When anyone says Joe Walsh, that's who I think of. "I can't complain, but sometimes I still do."

20. No, this would be the GOPig Congressman who owes over $100,000 in child support.

This would be the same guy that was screaming at his constituents at a Town Hall meeting in this YouTube video:

Yes, he's a real charmer.

21. This is what gains the respect of the Tea Party?

I think it speaks volumes about the entire conservative "movement".

These are the people who would strip health care and food stamps from the needy while preserving Medicare for themselves. When shopping for a candidate, they seek the most non-compassioned examples available. All others need not apply.

Imagine if a liberal told a veteran: "Thank you for your service". "Is that all you've got?"

22. This does not comply with the statement of purpose for the Latest Breaking News Forum.

It is more than 12 hours old.

The thread title does not match the title of the thread.

It's not really a news story.

Feel free to re-post in General Discussion, Politics 2012, or Good Reads.

Now I am locking.
