Ige triumphs; Abercrombie becomes the first incumbent to lose a gubernatorial primary in Hawaii

Source: Honolulu Star-Advertiser

In a historic upset, state Sen. David Ige, who was unknown to many voters six months ago, ousted Gov. Neil Abercrombie on Saturday in the Demo-cratic primary.

Ige, chairman of the Senate Ways and Means Committee, drubbed Abercrombie 67 percent to 32 percent, an unprecedented repudiation of an incumbent governor in Hawaii.

Abercrombie is the first governor since William Quinn, a Republican, to lose re-election in Hawaii since 1962 and the only governor to fall in a primary.

Ige will face Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona, a Republican, and former Hono-lulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, of the Hawaii Independent Party, in the November general election.

And the ascension of David Ige. Looks like he has experience. I wish him well in the general election. From what I've read in the links (thanks for providing them), Abercrombie outspent Ige 10-1. But he fell from grace with the teacher's union, and some felt he was too ego-driven. Ige was seen as an acceptable replacement. I'm interested in hearing from our Hawaiian posters on this!

thought it was okay to get so many people mad at him.. not a good way to get a second term if that's what he wanted.

From what I remember he was a good Rep for Hawai'i for many years and then he gets in the Gov's seat and worked his way into getting voted out in the Primary by another Dem. We'll see how David Ige does.

I do like his former Lt Gov that he appointed for the Senate, Brian Schatz.. he's much more Progressive than Colleen Hanabusa. I so hope he ends up winning in this very tight race going on right now!

Abercrombie, who outspent Ige 10 to 1 and was endorsed by Hawaii-born President Barack Obama and Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell, had trailed in public opinion polls before the primary and had poor job approval ratings for the past three years. But the governor's defeat is startling given the state's economic rebound during his four-year term and recent policy victories on the minimum wage, land conservation at Turtle Bay Resort and marriage equality.

Abercrombie said he would be behind Ige in November."

Looking more and more like Joe Dorman is the person to do it too. Mary Fallin is not a good person, very vindictive and cruel. Refuses the help poor people every chance she gets. Racist too boot

My Representative, Ben Sherrer, who I like real well, just endorsed Joe recently, saying he is the right person based on his having worked with him in the OK legislature. Ben's a good solid OK Democratic State Representative whose bumper sticker graces the right front bumper on my f150. Placed in a way to be clearly seen by any and everyone

call for the Dem Senate candidate. He's the Progressive and really good on the Environment and he's running against Colleen Hanabusa who is more corporatist.

all around the country. The rich and well connected are taking us to the cleaners and not much of what we have is left to be cleaned. If we don't get this election right the rest won't matter much.

I love my President
