A 12-year-old Florida boy was under arrest Thursday and accused of fatally shooting a homeless man in the head during a "horrific event," police said.
The boy is suspected in the killing of 54-year old Thomas Trent after being identified in a surveillance video by investigators, said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Assistant Chief Chris Butler.
The State Attorney's Office has not yet filed charges in the case, and declined further comment on the investigation.
"It's a horrific event," said Butler at a news conference. "Horrific for the victim ... but also you're talking about a 12-year-old child."

Florida Man becomes Florida Boy.
Gun nuts probably see this as a win for gun rights.

(11,065 posts)Kids getting sucked into gangs are getting younger and younger.
I'm curious how the police seem to be certain it was the 12 year old and not the 16 year old that pulled the trigger since that wasn't seen on any surveillance. Sounds to me like the 16 year old might have been putting the blame on the younger kid if it's only that older kid's word they have to go by.
I'd really like to know where the hell this kid's parents are. Twelve years old and out of the house at 2:25 a.m.??? Bad parenting is also why kids get sucked into gangs.

They got some smokes and not enough change to fill a pocket.
She left a four year old orphan and a hole in my heart big enough to swallow the next fifteen years of my life.
The dead are not the only victims.

(15,031 posts)Both killers -- the gunman and the accomplice -- were convicted, but then released at age 18.
Sometimes, late at night, I reflect on this all and find some release in the hope those two died as they lived, but it's small comfort at best and offset by those times when I find myself hoping they found a way to turn their lives around.
The pain at least has lessened. Forty-some years will do that.
But the anger oft times gleams bright red, and the belief we were all betrayed by society has never diminished.
