For the second time in less than a week, rockets have been found in a school in Gaza operated by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, the body said
Today, in the course of the regular inspection of its premises, UNRWA discovered rockets hidden in a vacant school in the Gaza Strip, the organization said in a statement issued Tuesday. As soon as the rockets were discovered, UNRWA staff were withdrawn from the premises, and so we are unable to confirm the precise number of rockets. The school is situated between two other UNRWA schools that currently each accommodate 1,500 internally displaced persons.

(23,272 posts)Clearly the UN is actively monitoring the buildings which means they are by no means abandoned imo.
In the U.S. schools are vacant for several months during the summer season. That doesn't mean they are abandoned.
happyslug
(14,779 posts)That is most owners of property, they do inspect such property. Inspection does not mean it is in use.

(23,272 posts)For summer break, for years - how long we don't know.
Regardless, its inconceivable that your township would allow your old high school to become a "warehouse" for anything, much less weapons and rockets.
The building is not abandoned. The UN is obviously being diligent about the building. Hamas is clearly in violation of the UN's guidelines about using their buildings for storing weapons.
Please note I'm not in support of Israel just because I'm saying this. Just pointing it out.
FWIW, I think both sides suck. I think both sides wanted a war, much like Bush wanted to get his war on with Iraq. Its grotesque beyond imagining and I hope Kerry can work a miracle and get a cease fire in place.

(14,779 posts)All that was reported was missiles were found. Hamas rules Gaza (having won the last election, then defeated an attempted coup) but that does NOT mean they have complete control over Gaza. Hamas is a Sunni group affiliated with the Moslem Brotherhood, most of the weapons being smuggled into Gaza are from Iran, a Shiite dominated country.
My point is Iran may have shipped this load to a Shiite group in Gaza, or any other group in Gaza. Iran has no loyalty to Hamas. In fact MOST rockets fired into Israel (Other then the recent flare up) were from such non-Hamas groups, some are Shiite, others think Hamas is to moderate.
Your premise is based on Hamas KNOWING these weapons were in that school, and we have no EVIDENCE of that fact. Finding weapons is NOT evidence that those weapons are weapons of HAMAS.

(5,169 posts)Either they don't believe the Palestinians could physically and mentally destroy their own children like that, or they believe that the end justifies the means.
Why do they have such a hold there? Do palestinians like to be bombed and blown apart? There must be a reason. What might that be?

(11,841 posts)And how the world will speak Arabic under the rule of Islam.
I had forgotten about these videos, but they arent the only ones. People do not understand that its not just a knee-jerk when you mention "human shields". A Hamas leader is quoted in another video talking about how proud the elderly and children are to BE one. There is also a recent clip showing people running TOWARD a building that about to be attacked by the Israelis.

(37,312 posts)have been growing up on this for several generations now. To insure there will never be peace. At least, not because of the Palestinians. For further research, Google Robert Fisk.

(23,272 posts)Really horrifying.
There will never be peace with this kind of brainwashing of young Palestinian children, feeding on a steady diet of hate. Even if its reaching just a small audience, this kind of toxic poison is insidious.
If there's a similar Israeli effort to similarly brainwash their young children, I'd be open to seeing that... probably couldn't watch an entire episode of one of those either but I would at least take a stab at it in fairness.

(2,219 posts)The video and guidelines were published in Arabic, but MEMRI has translated parts of the text into English:
*Anyone killed or martyred is to be called a civilian from Gaza or Palestine, before we talk about his status in jihad or his military rank. Don't forget to always add 'innocent civilian' or 'innocent citizen' in your description of those killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza.
*Begin [your reports of] news of resistance actions with the phrase 'In response to the cruel Israeli attack,' and conclude with the phrase 'This many people have been martyred since Israel launched its aggression against Gaza.' Be sure to always perpetuate the principle of 'the role of the occupation is attack, and we in Palestine are fulfilling [the role of] the reaction.'
--
*Avoid publishing pictures of rockets fired into Israel from [Gaza] city centers. This [would] provide a pretext for attacking residential areas in the Gaza Strip. Do not publish or share photos or video clips showing rocket launching sites or the movement of resistance [forces] in Gaza.
*To the administrators of news pages on Facebook: Do not publish close-ups of masked men with heavy weapons, so that your page will not be shut down [by Facebook] on the claim that you are inciting violence. In your coverage, be sure that you say: 'The locally manufactured shells fired by the resistance are a natural response to the Israeli occupation that deliberately fires rockets against civilians in the West Bank and Gaza'..."

(11,841 posts)You think its perfectly OK for leaders to tell their people to remain in an area that has been targeted? To ignore warnings that an attack is soon to happen? And its OK for Hamas to actually PREVENT people from leaving, because thats happening too?
Even the Arab countries who usually are quick to defend the palestinians have tired of their nonsense. Israel will not be swayed by a bunch of easily mis-led foreigners.
Ever since they reached the peace accord with Egypt, there has rarely been any problems between the two. And thats been decades. The palestinians could have peace if they wanted it. They want the destruction of Israel instead. Apparently from your comments, you're fine with that.

(45,850 posts)A United Nations school sheltering displaced Palestinians in central Gaza came under Israeli fire on Tuesday as a team was inspecting damage from a day earlier, a UN official said.
The official said a team, with Israeli clearance, was at the school run by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees UNRWA in Al-Maghazi when Israeli tank shelling resumed, hitting the building on Tuesday afternoon.
"Yesterday we got reports that it was shelled and so today we sent our guys down to investigate and see which side the fire came from," the official said, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity.
"They went down there with Israeli clearance, and while they were there, they came under Israeli shelling," he added.
