Remembering Jazz Legend Charlie Haden, Who Crafted His Voice In Bass
Source: NPR
"Jazz legend Charlie Haden has died. Polio damaged Haden's voice when he was young, but as a bassist and composer, Haden helped shape the sound of jazz and still spanned country and gospel. For more on Haden's life and music, you can hear Melissa Block speak with Slate columnist and jazz critic Fred Kaplan at the audio link on this page.
Bassist and composer Charlie Haden, whose resonant playing and penetrating melodic craft influenced generations of jazz musicians, died this morning in Los Angeles, after a prolonged illness. He was 76.
Born and raised in the rural Midwestern United States, Haden grew up singing on his family's country and western radio program from the age of two. As a teenager, he took up the bass, and in 1957, he moved to Los Angeles. There, he integrated quickly into the jazz community, including joining the band of the Ornette Coleman. His recordings and performances with Coleman's bands over decades not only anchored the saxophonist's innovative approaches to harmony and melody, but put his own instrument in the spotlight."

Shared as LBN because Mr. Haden was a wonderful bassist, but also person, and worked for liberal/progressive causes throughout his life.
I was fortunate to see him a few years ago with the Liberation Music Orchestra and Carla Bley - it was a remarkable show...I actually emailed back and forth just a bit with him afterwards, because he made some clear political statements - for our side - during the show.
Here is a vid of Charlie Haden with Pat Metheny.

(5,141 posts)It was mind-blowing. My jazz-crazed boyfriend had never heard of him before (still can't believe I actually turned him onto Stanko), and he said it was one of the best performances he'd ever seen. He still talks about it. The video below is the same line-up he had that night. The next evening we caught the three lads at Birdland sans Stanko, but he was sitting at the next table to us. I was in heaven.

(5,141 posts)I moved to LA for a few years back in the OO's. When I tell you every morning I woke up and said "I have to go back home to NY" I am not exaggerating. I'm a wee bit north, in Westchester, but we do take full advantage of all the City has to offer. We are both big jazz and classical fans (I am particularly fond with Early Music) so there is always something wonderful going on. Couple that with our first class museums...its an amazing place.
Are you from NY originally? Where are you now? If you visit, PM me and we'll go to Birdland!!

(2,976 posts)Currently Virginia. Surrounded by fellow ex northerners just south of Richmond. We give each other grocery lists when someone is visiting up north. I still have family and friends in Jersey. They think the world ends south of Cape May and reappears in Florida.
It may be a while before I make it back north. I will take you up on your kind offer if and when the time and tide agree.

(5,927 posts)What an amazing career, starting as a C&W singer and later playing on Ornette Coleman's first album! How crazy is that....I still have that album, and also Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra...I'm going to crack it open and listen to Song For Che.
He really was a fine bassist. Beautiful sound, great pitch, great taste. I still remember seeing him speak at the Detroit Jazz Festival some years ago. A great guy, a gentle giant. RIP Charlie. I'll miss you.

(1,317 posts)Charlie Haden's musical career spanned most of his life, yet he has passed much too soon. He played with some of the greatest jazz artists, including Gerry Mulligan, Art Pepper, Ornette Coleman, Paul Bley, John Coltrane, Michael Brecker, Don Cherry, Keith Jarrett, Alice Coltrane, Carla Bley, Jan Garbarek and many others. There was good reason they all wanted his accompaniment - his playing was sterling, his touch on the base immaculate. Just listen to "The Moon Song" on the album "Beyond the Missouri Sky" with Pat Metheny - what a wonderfully soothing, peaceful song, just beautiful.
Charlie Haden won 3 Grammy awards for recordings and was very deservedly awarded a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in 2013.
His ECM recording "Magico" with Jan Garbarek and Egberto Gismonti will always be one of my favorites.
May he forever rest in peace.

(18,402 posts)I saw him twice, once at the Montreal Jazz Festival, with Gonzalo Rubalcalo. So here's a sweet "Nocturne" for Charlie Haden:
And again at the Grant Park Jazz Festival in Chicago, with his Liberation Music Orchestra: a night under the stars I will never forget. Check them out in Africa (and don't be deceived by that American Heartland beginning):

(2,375 posts)Saw him only once live - with Quartet West. He was in a glass iso booth due to his hearing issue.....but the group sounded great.
Have many of the recordings mentioned already. He left a marvelous musical catalog for us.
