Palestinians say Israeli extremists killed teen

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Palestinians accused Israeli extremists of abducting and killing an Arab teenager and burning his body Wednesday, sparking hours of clashes in east Jerusalem and drawing charges that the youth was murdered to avenge the killings of three kidnapped Israeli teens.

Seeking to calm the explosive situation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged a swift inquiry into the "reprehensible murder" and called on people to respect the rule of law. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said it was clear extremist Jewish settlers were responsible and called on Israel to bring the killers to justice.

"The settlers have killed and burned a little boy. They are well known," Abbas said, accusing Israel of tolerating settler violence toward Palestinians. "I demand that the Israeli government hold the killers accountable."

The death added to the already heightened tensions caused by the killings of the three Israeli teenagers, whose bodies were discovered Monday just over two weeks after they disappeared in the West Bank. Israel accused Hamas, the Islamic militant group that controls Gaza, of being behind the abductions, which led to the largest ground operation in the West Bank in nearly a decade, with Israel arresting hundreds of Hamas operatives as part of a broad manhunt.

in revenge. If a few settlers did this, they need to be arrested and tried for this senseless murder.

What may be true is that the far extremes on each sides are guilty of these murders. Unfortunately, they likely succeed in getting what they both want -- a situation where the moderate forces on their side can not move to any compromise solution or even any actions that make life more tolerable for the Palestinians.

Israeli - Palestinian conflict that something always comes up to throw a monkey wrench in it.

As I recall - Kerry was attempting to make some headway there and Pope Francis held a prayer session with the heads of state of those countries.

What gives?

The game then was for each to blame the other and to try to push Kerry to allocate blame to the other side. Kerry and Pope Francis were sincere, it is hard to say the same for Netanyahu. His concern seemed to be more with keeping his right leaning coalition intact rather than considering leading a more centrist coalition pulling in the "peace" parties.

Since the talks blew up, the Palestinians created a unity government, that included "technocrats" rather than people from Hamas itself. While you could argue that one Palestinian government could be helpful and, by necessity, that has to include Hamas, the inclusion caused the Israelis to go ballistic one demand as they looked for the teens and their kidnappers was for Abbas to roll back this liaison.

Other than if you subscribe to the idea that "the darkest hour is just before dawn", this problem is more intractable than ever. The Israeli reaction, before the kidnappings, was that the right was calling for things like annexing 60% of the West Bank - saying they want the most land with as few Palestinians as possible.

To show how far out some in the government are, there were some complaints when Kerry issued a statement on the death of the Palestinian child. Here is is:

The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms the despicable and senseless abduction and murder of Muhammad Hussein Abu Khdeir. It is sickening to think of an innocent 17 year old boy snatched off the streets and his life stolen from him and his family. There are no words to convey adequately our condolences to the Palestinian people.

The authorities are investigating this tragedy, a number of Israeli and Palestinian officials have condemned it, and Prime Minister Netanyahu has been emphatic in calling for all sides “not to take the law into their own hands”. Those who undertake acts of vengeance only destabilize an already explosive and emotional situation. We look to both the Government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority to take all necessary steps to prevent acts of violence and bring their perpetrators to justice. The world has too often learned the hard way that violence only leads to more violence and at this tense and dangerous moment, all parties must do everything in their power to protect the innocent and act with reasonableness and restraint, not recrimination and retribution.
