Mississippi State University Shooting: Student Shot To Death At Residence Hall, Officials Say

Source: AP via HuffPo

STARKVILLE, Miss. — A student was shot to death at a Mississippi State University residence hall late Saturday night, prompting campus-wide alerts as authorities searched for suspects who fled the scene.

University spokeswoman Maridith Geuder said police received a call about the shooting at Evans Hall around 10 p.m. Saturday. The victim was taken to a hospital where he subsequently died.

Three male suspects fled the building in a blue Crown Victoria. As of early Sunday, no arrests had been made and the campus remained under emergency conditions.

1. This is so sad.

When I was in college, admittedly many years ago, the most bizarre thing I remember happening in a residence hall is when we removed a center piece from a double door to the outside so that we could carry Frank Sophie's VW Bug into the hallway. The only thing that looked weirder than that car in the hallway was Frank's face when he saw it there.

That was a prank. Today they murder people, and that's no prank. It's just sad.

4. from their website

4. Am I allowed to have a firearm on campus for hunting or protection purposes? Will the university police store a firearm for me?

No. It is a felony for a student to possess a firearm or weapon on campus. State code § 97-37-17 prohibits the possession of firearms on campus except in very rare cases. Additionally, university policy and rules prohibit the possession of firearms on campus. Individuals found violating this law and rules are subject to arrest and/or referral to the Dean of Students. beause of this prohibition, the university police are not allowed to store firearms or other weapons.

Mississippi passes new campus gun laws

ARTICLE | FEBRUARY 19, 2012 - 9:53PM

Beginning this year at the University of Mississippi, students can complete an eight-hour course to have a concealed weapons permit, which allows them to carry a firearm on any campus in the state. People wanting to take the course have to be over the age of 21 and must pass a background check to be able to receive the advanced permit.

Under the new law, people with the proper permit can carry firearms to locations like courtrooms, police stations and college campuses, which were once off-limits.

Chancellor Dan Jones told The Daily Mississippian last year that he believed Ole Miss did not need to modify its gun laws.
UPD Chief of Police Calvin Sellers said he is not in favor of allowing students to carry concealed weapons on campus.

p.s. this article mention U. of Mississippi (Ole Miss) not Mississippi State, but it sounds like a statewide law

25. Zimmerman was carrying legally.

Why do so many pro-gun people assume that people who would get a gun permitted would never use it improperly? People change. People develop mental illnesses. People have anger issues.

Just because someone has a legal gun permit doesn't mean they'll never use it illegally.

It would not make any difference whether guns on campus were "allowed" or not.

Said kid probably took daddy's car out to hunt down the mean college student who in some way insulted him. I wonder if said kid has a drivers license?

26. It would make it much easier for a college to keep guns off a campus

because if a gun was reported and discovered, the gun owner could be expelled.

This policy would be useful both as a deterrent and after the fact (after a gun is discovered).

27. These people drove onto campus, shot someone, and drove off campus.

It seems likely that the shooters were not students, and would not care about campus regulations regarding firearms.

30. The majority of students in large universities live off campus.

Last edited Sun Mar 25, 2012, 03:26 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1)

So the fact that they drove onto campus in a car doesn't tell us anything about their status as students.

And just because a gun ban might not have prevented this death doesn't mean it wouldn't be a good thing overall. The vast majority of colleges have serious problems with student alcohol use. Student housing isn't a good place for guns.

32. Well I agree. Just saying, if you are planning on shooting someone,

all the laws in the world are not going to stop you. A gun ban might stop an honest kid from packing a gun when he leaves for school. But it will not stop a criminal mind.

34. Right. But if you're not planning on shooting anyone,

just high or stoned or otherwise out of control, it's probably better if there isn't a gun handy, legal or illegal.

Even "honest kids" do stupid things sometimes.

3. boycott Huffington Post permanently

come on people! Huffpo has turned into a corporate whore since they sold out. The extreme censorship they use on commentors now.. why would you validate that?

Dick Cheney heart transplant, that normally would have 4,000 or 5,000 responses, but it only has 700+ and they are mostly well wishers! it is mind gaging to even read them.

We are the ones who made that site famous and they are blocking the original people who used that site.. I would strongly suggest and ask you to consider boycotting them and preferably use original sites where original info came from.

After all Huffpo steals their info from sites/media all over the place.

Why does this single shooting make headlines across the nation when stories like this one from New Orleans go unnoticed? New Orleans has multiple shooting almost every single day..

I think it's a case of the MSM trying to gin up viewers by conflating this incident with the Virginia Tech incident of a number of years ago.

31. Student's name was John Sanderson; he was 21.

Source: CNN.com

unfortunately, s***mf***t.org must've linked to this article as people are screaming about how the suspects were black and the victim was white. On political issues, CNN.com does get liberal comments voted up the most but in racial issues, the racists usually win. (Oh, the comparison with Trayvon Martin is VERY stupid since this case here appears to be part of a robbery not a vigilante justice act. And vigilante justice usually is more controversial and unique an event than typical crimes.)

http://www.wmctv.com/story/17283034/msu-murder-suspects-victim-had-criminal-pasts

Seem the lilly white victim isn't......

In 2007, after being arrested on a charge of the sale of a small amount of marijuana, Sanderson told Madison police he and another man had carried out auto burglaries in affluent subdivisions, according to police reports obtained by The Clarion-Ledger through a public records request. Two years later, he complained of having his house burglarized and having his Playstation 3 and video games stolen.

That same year, Madison police responded to a fight involving Sanderson, according to records. In 2010, Sanderson was charged with two counts of aggravated assault. According to police reports, Sanderson waved a man he knew over to his vehicle in the parking lot of Walmart in Madison. He extended his hand to shake hands and when the man shook hands,

Sanderson reportedly pulled the man into the vehicle and shot him in the face with a BB pistol before shooting him twice in the back of the head as the man turned away.

Sanderson then grabbed the man's coat, dragged him 30 feet and then tried to run the man over, according to the records. Sanderson later told police the man had tried to choke him.

Sentenced to two years in prison, Sanderson completed the Regimented Inmate Discipline program in 2010, enabling him to have his felony conviction expunged.
