House Dems unveil new gun bill

Source: politico

House Democrats are looking to strengthen the nation’s gun laws bill by bill.

More than two dozen Democratic lawmakers led by California Rep. Mike Thompson unveiled legislation Friday that would inject new money into the coffers of law enforcement attempting to prevent gun violence by the mentally ill — less than a week after a mass shooting in Santa Barbara that left six dead.

The bill would ban outpatients who have been involuntarily committed from purchasing firearms if a court has deemed them dangerous and improve the system used to report potentially dangerous individuals to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. It also would stop those convicted of stalking or domestic abuse from buying guns.

from the 4473 firearms form to purchase....

f. Have you ever been adjudicated mentally defective (which includes a determination by a court, board, commission, or other lawful authority that you are a danger to yourself or to others or are incompetent to manage your own affairs) OR have you ever been committed to a mental institution? (See Instructions for Question 11.f.)

i. Have you ever been convicted in any court of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence?
(See Instructions for Question 11.i.)

I agree the NICS data needs to be improved. However this would not have stopped Sandy Hook or the latest murders.

They seem to be popular lately with certain DU members (no pun intended)

If it makes you feel better, go ahead and mock away- it merely
confirms my observation that gun control advocacy is largely dominated by people with
the emotional development of middle schoolers...

It is already against the law to sell weapons to adjudicated mentally ill and people committed of domestic violence. Doubling down on existing laws with new laws will make everyone safer. I agree with getting more and better data into the NICS system.

That is a real cute post, nice penis reference and that is sure to open up great dialog but I think just a little childish.

And you wonder why firearms control laws don't get passed?
Just look in the mirror for the answer.

Believe it or not, the vast majority of gun owners, especially in rural areas of the country, are completely reasonable people. Watching videos of suburban kids trying to gain machismo from mishandling loaded firearms makes nearly all of us cringe.

If you support firearms, you need to support firearm safety. And easy access by the insane, and/or angry drunks, is about as opposite of safe as one could possibly imagine.

From what I can tell it's a damn sight better than the right wing idea of "Let's just compile a database of all mentally ill people!" that comes up after every mass shooting.

The part about domestic abuse is going to chap some teabagger ass.

It would seem that this bill would be adding more names to the already existing database used by NICS.

Must still be shopping for sponsors.
Makes reviewing the bill rather difficult.
