TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida's governor has appointed a new prosecutor to oversee the investigation into last month's shooting death of an unarmed black teenager.

Gov. Rick Scott late Thursday appointed Angela B. Corey to oversee the investigation into the death of Trayvon Martin.

She is the prosecutor for the Jacksonville area. Scott said this came after the local prosecutor for the central Florida county where the shooting happened, Norman Wolfinger, volunteered to recuse himself.

Martin's parents have complained that the 28-year-old shooter, George Zimmerman, has not been charged after he claimed self-defence.

9. I hear ya. Not feeling good on this given that the actual request

from the City Manager was for an "independent prosecutor". A lifelong political R-hack from one of the most redneck areas of the state (I have family there - trust me on Duval/Clay County) isn't my idea of "Independent".

6. Angela B. Corey--she is not lacking in experience.

Angela B. Corey (born October 31, 1954) is an American lawyer currently serving as the State Attorney in Florida's Fourth Judicial Circuit Court, which includes Duval, Nassau and Clay counties. The first woman to hold the position, she was elected in 2008.

She was hired by Ed Austin in 1981 during his tenure as State Attorney from 1975-1991, and remained an Assistant State Attorney after Harry Shorstein was appointed by Governor Lawton Chiles in 1991. During her 26 years as a prosecutor, she tried several hundred cases, which included 54 homicides.
In 1996, her primary responsibility became homicide prosecutions, but she also supervised lawyers in the Felony division. Shorstein changed Corey's work assignment in 2005 from director of the Gun Crime Unit to director of the County Court, which handles misdemeanors. In that position, she trained newly hired lawyers to be prosecutors. She previously served as Juvenile division supervisor.

...Corey made the decision to run for the office of State Attorney in 2006. After her candidacy became known, her working relationship with Shorstein became difficult. He terminated her employment in November 2006. Afterwards, she was hired by John Tanner, State Attorney for the Seventh Judicial Circuit, to perform the same job functions she did in Jacksonville, working homicide cases in St. Johns County.

7. Good bio...

and I'll bet Zimmerman is arrested in the first week of her tenure. She knows the game and has been handed her instructions by the Gov. : Throw that asshole under the bus and stop the bad pr for the state, it's legislature and assbackward laws.

Bet on it.

btw, she'll only arrest Zimmerman if she can find him.

12. The state IS getting brutally excoriated.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's how it shakes out.

10. Y'think thats going to happen?

She one of theirs, and the GOP doesn't want to foggy up this election year so I guess you might be right. The higher ups from the GOP party has instructed their minions to sorta lay off the "war on women", sooooooooooo, Zimmerman and the police department will probably do down hard.

I don't think they are going to revise that horrible law tho.

11. Anyone Rick Scott appoints will be HIS lackey

If you live in Florida, you will know how CORRUPT he is. The only hope is somehow if the FEDS get involved.

13. Amen to that, however

imo the feds will hold off doing anything other than collect data and observe as this case winds its way through the Florida legal system.
