Santorum: "I don't care" about unemployment rate
Source: Reuters
MOLINE, Illinois (Reuters) - Republican White House hopeful Rick Santorum said on Monday he did not care about the U.S. unemployment rate, perhaps the nation's most closely watched economic indicator, despite being embroiled in a campaign largely focused on the still-sputtering economy. "I don't care what the unemployment rate is going to be. It doesn't matter to me. My campaign doesn't hinge on unemployment rates and growth rates," Santorum said during a campaign appearance in Illinois, which on Tuesday holds the next contest in the state-by-state battle for the Republican presidential nomination. Santorum, a former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania known mainly for a strong religious conservatism, is battling Mitt Romney, a former Massachusetts governor and the frontrunner in the race to oppose President Barack Obama in the November election Read more: http://news.yahoo.com/santorum-dont-care-unemployment-rate-142423520.html

3. Just to add a bit more context to the quote. Nothing in politics is ever truly black and
|
white. There will always be shades of grey in everything.
"As far as my political campaign ... of course I care about the unemployment rate. I want the unemployment rate to go down, but I'm saying my candidacy doesn't hinge on whether the unemployment rate goes up and down. My candidacy is about something that transcends that; it's about freedom. It's not about Governor Romney's idea that he is going to fix the economy," he said. |

6. How can his campaign be about freedom...
|
when he wants to repress us with antiquated religious doctrine?
Hell even Jesus pretty much refuted most of the Old Testament laws outside of the Ten Commandments. |

7. I only included that because I didn't want to break up the context of the quote
|
about unemployment. With that said, I agree that his campaign is not really abut freedom at all, but about pushing a religious agenda.

17. Context is everything.
|
In this case, the quote you used and highlighted was not said at the same time as the quote in the OP. The latter quote came AFTER Romney attacked Santorum for his I-don't-care-about-the-unemployment-rate remarks. Santorum THEN gave the "clarification" that you quoted, to reporters in an effort to walk back his original remarks which were being used against him.
Too little, too late. His remarks to his supporters stand. His weak attempt to fix it in the realm of public opinion fails. |

18. Santorum also had one of his spokespersons ...
|
John Brabaker (sp) on CNN trying to "clarify" what he REALLY mean't to say.
The spokesperson attributed Santorum's tiredness from the pace on the campaign trail as part of the reason for the statement. He's tired now? How would he ever keep up the pace Obama maintains 24/7? Spokesperson said little Ricky would get a 3 week break after LA. Poor baby. |

21. Be very careful what you wish for. The same thing could be used against our progressive
|
candidates. I will always be willing to listen to a follow up comment from any politician if it helps to clarify an earlier remark. But if you want to take the narrow view, that's your prerogative.
It really doesn't mean much anyway because Santorum is basing his entire campaign on hard core right wing social issues. That's a sure fire loser. |

8. That's because he knows his economic recovery plan is pure bullshit
|
His "plan" to improve the economy is to focus on the family. Apparently he thinks that if he could just get people to go to church, not divorce or have kids out of wedlock, and stamp out pornography and other evils, that somehow everything will just magically improve.
That's why he doesn't care about unemployment figures...you know, stuff that has to deal with the real world. |

9. I've noticed that the goppers
|
are always spewing "Freedom" but their actions say otherwises. Voter suppression, women's rights, civil rights, educational rights, worker's rights, and freedom to practice religion.
Goppers are more concerned about what is going on in your bedroom than your pocket book. They care more for the upper class than the lower class and want to keep that way FOREVER. Un-American, yeah, I remember that during 2008 and its still continuing thru 2012. Now goppers have their brain dead females spewing that Dems are an ALL BOYS CLUB, that all these laws that the gooper legislators are doing across country is NOTHING, move along, nonthing to see here, blame the Dems cause its them not us and unfortunately, 35% of their base believes it. And the corporate media will side with corporation America. |

12. Arghhhh.....why do we accept "sound bites" the same as the reich wing?
|
I'm glad SlimJimmy put Santorum's statement in context. Yes the statement, "I don't care what it is going to be - it doesn't matter" appears damaging BUT....what he is saying is even if the unemployment rate dropped to 3%, his campaign would continue with its current message. He isn't going to tailor his message or proposals simply because the rate is up or down. That was an honest statement.
Now do I think his economic plan would do anything more than worsen the situation? Yes, it would further erode the middle class and balloon the deficit while making the rich (including him) even richer. But let's stop buying into the soundbite mentality. We should pride ourselves on being honest brokers with some degree of intellectual honesty. I know it is taking the high road when the limp balls on the right will not but it is the respectable thing to do. |
