Utah governor vetoes bill curbing sex education in public schools
Source: MSNBC
Utah Gov. Gary Herbert on Friday vetoed a controversial bill banning public schools from teaching contraception as a way of preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
The bill, which also sought to bar instruction on homosexuality or other aspects of human sexuality other than the teaching of abstinence, would have been the first of its kind in the nation if it had become law.
It had previously cleared Utah's Republican-controlled House and Senate, and Herbert was widely expected to sign it.

"If HB 363 were to become law, parents would no longer have the option the overwhelming majority is currently choosing for their children. I am unwilling to conclude that the state knows better than Utah's parents as to what is best for their children," he said.

This may and may not be true depending... certainly true with this bill.
But parents DON'T always know what's best for their children (look at whom the parents put in office!) and I hate that tired old cliche. "Parents" is too broad a term.

I hope the sane people in Utah vote the legislators who came up with this out of office.
Our main problem isn't just the presidency - it's the legislators who keep coming up with this crap and the governors that go along with it.

(18,652 posts)Not good for the kids if they're not well cared for and not good for the state if the state has to care for them.
A little birth control goes a long way.
He's hoping the legislature will override his veto and so he can wash his hands of this mess: he'll claim he vetoed it, but can also claim to be part of the historical record of being the administration that let this legislation go through.
Such political game-playing is not unusual.
