Egypt unrest: Court clears 'virginity test' doctor

Source: BBC News

A military court in Egypt has acquitted an army doctor accused of carrying out forced "virginity tests" on women protesters, state media reports.

Ahmed Adel was cleared because the judge found contradictions in witness statements, Mena news agency said.

The case was brought by one of the women, Samira Ibrahim, who said the "tests" took place after they had been detained during protests last year.

Demonstrators are gathering to protest the ruling, the BBC's Jon Leyne says.

are remarkably similar to the "intravaginal scans" the Republicans are now pushing. Both of them are little more than the legalized rape of women who don't comform to what some men in power believe should be the accepted norm of female behavior.

In fact, I wonder if the Republicans didn't get the idea from watching how the Egyptian military handles "uppity" women.

My daughter had a bad fall during a softball game when she was eleven and started bleeding heavily. Doctor's diagnosis: hymen rupture. He told us it happens often to young girls entering puberty who fall on their rumps hard, get struck on their abdomens or perform strenuous physical activities such as some sports, biking or horseback riding. Plus, many girls with intact hymens sometimes don't even bleed when they are ruptured and some hymens can stay intact after years of having intercourse, usually only rupturing in the birth process. Doctor should have his license revoked.

In fact, it's Islam (and Christianity, and Judaism) that need their licenses revoked, not this one doctor.

I understand your sentiment but I had to say this. I have an atheist coworker who is very socially conservative. Similarly there are plenty of religious people (including of the religions you listed) who are not socially conservative. In fact, if you look you'll notice a pattern that a lot (I admit not all) of these things are actually (unfortunate) cultural traditions that are shared by more conservative people of all religions in the particular culture and not at all by people of the same religions in another culture.
