Syria's deputy oil minister announces resignation

Source: BBC

Syria's deputy oil minister has announced his resignation, saying he is joining the anti-government revolt. Abdo Hussameddin announced his defection in a video posted on YouTube. He is the highest ranking civilian to abandon President Bashar al-Assad since the uprising erupted a year ago.

His announcement comes after the UN humanitarian chief said parts of Homs had been "devastated", following a visit to the city bombed by Syria's government troops.

Mr Hussameddin posted his video on YouTube later on Wednesday. "I, Abdo Hussameddin, deputy oil and mineral wealth minister in Syria, announce my defection from the regime, resignation from my position and withdrawal from the Baath Party.

"I am joining the revolution of the people who reject injustice and the brutal campaign of the regime," he added. Mr Hussameddin, 58, has been deputy minister since August 2009.

1. Purported tweet from him.

Purported quote from the Asyrian defected deputy oil minister:

moez معز ‏ @libyansrevoltCloseDefected #Syria Minister: Russia and China, your actions have proven that you cannot be any further than friends of the Syrian people.

EDIT

RT @libyansrevolt: Defected #Syria Minister: My final message is to my colleagues, I've worked in system for 30yrs but will not finish my time with this murder

3. That is insane if true. Dude just signed a death warrant if his side loses.

It takes serious bravery to defect when your side is in dire straits.

4. I wonder where Adnan Bakkour, the last "defector" is...

It's entirely possible that this man defected, but it is far from certain.
