Conservative group ALEC pushes stealth tax on homeowners who install solar panels

An alliance of corporations and conservative activists is mobilising to penalise homeowners who install their own solar panels – casting them as “freeriders” – in a sweeping new offensive against renewable energy, the Guardian has learned.

Over the coming year, the American Legislative Exchange Council (Alec) will promote legislation with goals ranging from penalising individual homeowners and weakening state clean energy regulations, to blocking the Environmental Protection Agency, which is Barack Obama’s main channel for climate action.

Details of Alec’s strategy to block clean energy development at every stage – from the individual rooftop to the White House – are revealed as the group gathers for its policy summit in Washington this week.

About 800 state legislators and business leaders are due to attend the three-day event, which begins on Wednesday with appearances by the Wisconsin senator Ron Johnson and the Republican budget guru and fellow Wisconsinite Paul Ryan.

7. Why do I have to read The Guardian to find out news like this?

Tonight's nightly news (CBS & NBC) included a recap of Sandy Hook shooting, recap of 19 Hotshot firefighters, recap of O'care, a weather report, an art report, the Fast & Furious star's death, beached whales and northern lights. ALEC wanting to block renewables and impose a tax on citizens that use them? Zip, Zilch, Nada.

Hey, maybe in a year, CBS will cobble together a propaganda piece about how great the new law taxing renewables and gutting the EPA is. They can air it on 60 minutes.

Meanwhile, I think I'll stay with The Guardian.

8. ALEC defends the fossil fuel and extraction industries, it always goes back to Oil and Coal.

It's that simple.

9. Correct me if I'm wrong but if you are on the grid you pay line fees already.

My electric bill is never zero but my gas bill is close to zero in the summer. In the summer months I still get a $25-30 dollar charge that almost all service fees.
