MEXICO CITY (AP) - A missing shipment of radioactive cobalt-60 was found Wednesday near where the stolen truck transporting the material was abandoned in central Mexico, the country's nuclear safety director said.

The highly radioactive material had been removed from its container, officials said, and one predicted that anyone involved in opening the box could be in grave danger of dying within days.

The cobalt-60 was left in a rural area about a kilometer (a half a mile) from Hueypoxtla, an agricultural town of about 4,000 people, but it posed no threat or a need for an evacuation, said Juan Eibenschutz, director general of the National Commission of Nuclear Safety and Safeguards.

"Fortunately there are no people where the source of radioactivity is," Eibenschutz said.

The cargo truck was stolen from a gas station in central Mexico, and authorities have put out an alert in six central states and the capital to find it, Mexican and U.N. nuclear officials said Wednesday. 1. Maddow said that there a 'conflicting reports' -- not all of it may have been found yet.

2. Can't help thinking of Frank Parnell.....

of the 80's movie 'Repo Man' by Alex Cox.

Anyone here old enough to remember that one?

6. Pablo Picasso was never called an asshole.

Yes, I remember it, but mostly I remember the line in my subject line--it was a song lyric from the movie. Also, I believe that at one point, Emilio Estevez's character says something like, "Let's eat pasta and do crimes". I haven't thought about Repo Man in years.

16. "Eyes melt! Skin explodes! Every body dead!"

Yes, I remember it

And I have to wonder how many people have mistakenly rented Repo Man thinking they were getting that other movie, "Repo Men" only to discover a cult classic and more enjoyable film...

3. Back in the 80's

I was working for a bar supply company and we got a visit from the NRC. Someone had scrapped an x-ray machine without removing the radioactive materials. It got melted down and was made into cast iron table feet. The poor guy had to chase them down in 48 states.

Oh, the wonders of free market capitalism without any of those messy government regulations.

4. I noticed that it says radioactive material on the box

But no Danger, or Don't open, or the international radioactive sign.

I feel bad for whoever opened that box. Even though they were thieves, no one should die of radiation poisoning for stealing a truck. Its an awful death.

13. I guess if you steal a truck, you never really know what it is you are stealing.

9. At least they found it.

Cobalt 40 is not nice stuff. I hope they get it all. The people exposed to the stuff are likely fucked.

At least it isn't Cobalt Thorium G.

14. How does this contamination compare . .

to the dozens of tons of depleted uranium that the U.S.
spewed all over Serbia and Iraq. (and Vieques? and ___ ?)
Any scientists out there? I really want to know.

15. I actually feel sorry for the guys who stole this...

I read elsewhere it's very likely they will die. It seems they didn't know what they had and thought it was a normal truck jacking. These guys deserve to go to prison but I don't wish terminal radiation death on anyone.

17. They had a truckjacking in Texas once where a guy slipped away with a load from a slaughterhouse...

The load turned out to be headed for a dog food manufacturer. Beef rectums.

Imagine the guy in prison telling his fellow inmates he was busted with thousands of hot assholes.
