Haywood principal resigns after anti-gay remarks

Source: The Leaf Chronicle

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. (WTW) — A West Tennessee high school principal resigned on Thursday after the American Civil Liberties Union said the principal threatened to expel gay students who showed affection for someone of the same sex.

According to a news release from the ACLU, Haywood High School Principal Dorothy Bond also said that gay students were "not on God's path" and were "ruining their lives."

The published policies of the Haywood County schools list "physical contact" as a minor infraction. But students complained to the ACLU that during a Feb. 9 school assembly, Bond said that gay students showing affection could face 60-day suspensions, assignments to an alternative school or expulsion.

The ACLU also said Bond has incorporated prayers and proselytizing into school events and once told a lesbian student that she would go to hell.

Used to be that this kind of behavior would be condoned & encouraged. I grew up in the South many years ago, and I remember how ugly it was. It is so encouraging to see not only this kind of anti-gay behavior stopped, but also the proselytizing which drove me about as crazy as the bigotry did. Perhaps the two go hand in hand (bigotry & fundamentalist Christianity?).

Maybe the principal can find a better job at the private sector where she doesn't have to deal with those pesky gays. Like at Fox News?

And yet, they (the officials) can't seem to stop doing it, either.

10. I agree but I was talking specifically about the black POV

there are prominent African-American Christian leaders who have publicly advocated for things like California Prop. 8. Such as Bishop Harry Jackson and the disgraced Bishop Eddie Lee Long (who settled a case over alleged child molestation). They clearly understand how blacks can participate in mainstream society because of the Civil Rights Movement. However, religion has influenced homophobia among African Americans so much that they can't equate their bigoted attitudes against gays with the bigoted attitudes that whites gave blacks in the 1950s.

know how Harry Jackson is and even if I did, I think for myself. There are more people like me than those who follow the direction of these so-called bishops. and yes, I'm a Christian, I just make my own decisions. As for long, ( I refuse to capitalise his first name), I don't think is was child molestation, it was semi-forced sexual relationships with some young men in the church. They were over all 18, IIRC

"What do you expect me to do, apologize?"
"No, Ms. Bond, I expect you to resign."

(Alas, there were no lasers involved.)
