State and Federal Police Crack Down on Burning Man in Unprecedented Show of Force

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by greatauntoftriplets (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

One of the most peaceful and long running festivals in the country is under attack by police, with early arrivals experiencing a show of force like they have never seen before.

MORE AT LINK: http://intellihub.com/

And this from a burners Facebook post.....

In response to this unprecedented show of force, volunteers and workers nearby are calling for a general strike, with some of them organizing and refusing to set up the festival until the police promise to keep off the playa and let the Burning Man crew handle security inside the event.
In a recent interview a spokesperson for the group “Reform In Our Time” said that:
“Our demands are simple: We want law enforcement excluded….. The problem is a huge growth in outside law enforcement officers invading the playa, not the money it costs. We would really appreciate them if they stayed outside and only came in when we really wanted them to.
If the cops would leave their badges and guns at home and just be burners like everyone else in BRC, we’d welcome them just like we welcome anyone else. We’d even build them a Donut Camp! We’re not against cops necessarily, we just don’t want outsiders doing law enforcement in our city. We have everything we need to take care of it ourselves without any outside help!”

And so it ends. This is crap, strictly because BM refused to be held hostage by the cops asking for more money to police the festival. So they are ending it. Cops are stupid. All that money, spent between Reno and gerlach will be GONE GONE and the cops will keep theri staffing elvels and screwing the taxpayers.....

This all about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ that BurningMan pays the local sheirrif to police the festival. And this year they demanded a MUCH higher fee, more cops, more equipment etc and BurningMan told them "NO"......... So now they are showing BM who's boss.

you can find that discussion here........ http://burners.me/2012/08/17/county-cops-duke-it-out-with-feds-for-burning-man-buck/ All about the money. Like the mob if you ask em. DON'T pay PROTECTION? Well them we shut you down. Fucking thug pieces of shit. I will never never ever set foot in Nevada again. I will drive across it, but I will not buy one single fucking thing. FUCK THAT PLACE.

It does also appear to be a shake down for more money!

6. It'll be OK. They simply cannot demand that law enforcement be excluded.

As it stands, it's become a terribly expensive activity, tickets are crazy prices.

And, as they've changed locations over the years, they are never free of oversight and regulation, even on private lands.

Whatever costs to taxpayers need to be born in order for this event to proceed should rightly be provided by the people organizing and attending the event.

Any other scenario is unfair.

9. If the event was held on a barge in the middle of a body of water can

the POLICE still demand to be there?????

In other words we are living in a police state and anything you do can/will be scrutinized, including this comment....?

10. Yes. Anywhere within the US and coastal waters, some or other agency has the responsibility...

...of protecting the inhabitants and others from themselves, protecting the environment, and seeing to it that laws are obeyed.

Unless the event is 100+ miles offshore (unless it's 200), then they're under somebody's jurisdiction.

Whenever you get tens of thousands of people together, there are injuries and crimes and needs for services, especially in such a dry and dusty place for people who just show up without food or water, and the BLM or sheriffs or whatever agency has a duty to perform. Negligence of that duty opens them up to lawsuits.

I didn't make that up, it's just the way it is.

16. That isn't the problem....

Always been cops of all jurisdictions at Burning Man. this is about them acting like THUGS and doing this because they lost the lawsuit and were told NO to their demands. Simple, a SHAKEDOWN. You don't give us money, we shut you down.

8. Seems to be a general and increasing thing

I was recently at another festival, and the police set up a huge portable observation tower, complete with multiple video cameras, right over the main concert area. They had a strong and unpleasant presence all over the festival, making very questionable busts.

One story: Someone asked a festival goer if he could have a beer. They person handed them a beer and the person buying (a cop) gave him a five dollar bill. As soon as the person accepted it, they busted him for selling alcohol without a license.

Another person was arrested because there just happened to be a back pack next to him with drugs in it. Wasn't his, and likely could have been planted by the police.

Just two of many.

15. couldn't find the article at the link

Did find a lot of other articles bashing liberals and the left wing, for example:

http://intellihub.com/2013/08/01/how-big-government-destroys-and-economic-freedom-revives/

Sadly, folks on the left, like Harris-Perry, who perpetuate the increasingly, suspect Keynesian gospel that government “investments” drive prosperity are deluding themselves and their (dwindling) audience. The last thing that Detroit’s dilapidated status quo needs is another injection of the poisonous policies that damned the city my first place.

snip

Despite the hogwash that some on the left insist on peddling, Detroit is not a test case in limited-government gone awry- nor is it an accurate portrayal of libertarianism’s aspirations. It is merely the ultimate result of decades of big, bloated government policies, as well as, their dire, unintended consequences.

Looked like an interesting story perhaps you can find a better source.

20. The link shows no story about Burning Man, from www.burningman,com ....

http://www.burningman.com/preparation/blm_stipulations/blmstipulations.html#.Uhf9fT_iWco

BLM STIPULATIONS
Share on facebook Share on twitter Share on pinterest_share Share on email

As is their standard permitting procedure, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), who provides the permit for Black Rock LLC to hold the annual Burning Man Event in the Black Rock Desert, sets out a series of permit stipulations. One of those states: "The permittee shall post a copy of the Special Recreation Permit (Form 2930-1) ... on the Burning Man website...." Furthermore, another stipulation states, in part: "BRC shall implement a controlled substance and alcohol use policy. This policy will be posted and maintained on all public information boards and relayed to participants through other available means."

On July 23, 2012 the Bureau of Land Management issued a 4-year permit for the Burning Man event. Below are the relevant documents that BRC is making available publicly.

BLM Permit for 2013 (PDF)
BLM Stipulations for 2013 (PDF)
BLM Special Recreation Permit Decision for 2013 (PDF)
Drug and Alcohol Policy for 2013 (PDF)
BLM Closure Order for 2013 (PDF)
BLM Closure Order Map for 2013 (PDF)

And no mention of any problemos at all with anyone.
