Gohmert: GOP Leaders ‘Scared To Death’ Of Plan To Defund Obama Care

Source: The Hill

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) said Tuesday that the Republican leadership is "scared to death" of efforts to block funding for ObamaCare, fearing the strategy could end the GOP's House majority.
"They think if we have a shutdown, or a big showdown, we may lose the majority, and they will lose their leadership positions," Gohmert said at an event in Longview, Texas, according to the Longview News-Journal.

Many Republicans see President Obama's decision to delay the employer mandate for a year, and other delays to the law, as a reason to defund the entire law as part of the 2014 spending deal.

Others, however, say the GOP should be pushing for a broad, one-year delay of the law. Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.) told The Atlanta Journal Constitution on Tuesday that the GOP should work quietly with Democrats to engineer a delay

Gohmert and other Republicans in the House and Senate have said they will push to defund ObamaCare as part of the continuing spending resolution for 2014. But many GOP lawmakers fear the party will be hurt if the strategy ends in a government shutdown.

2. Go Louis! Press forward! Don't listen to the dimwits who see you as a nitwit . . .

Stand your ground, Louis! The GOP Majority be damned! It's more important that you push for your "principles" (even if it does result in political suicide). Don't worry about a thing, Louis: There will be plenty of Democrats in the House ready (and eager) to pick up the pieces.

4. Remember what Forest Gump's mom said

"Crazy is as crazy does", at least it was something like that. Gohmert has to be one of the craziest people in his party, so I sure hope the rest of the republicans listen to him, then they will all be in the same boat!

"Gohmert said Republicans need to stand up for what they believe in — as Democrats did when they passed the president's healthcare reform law — and now push to defund it."

9. And just what would this 'shut down' look like? Anyone know?

It's not worth it if lives and jobs will be lost and the professions that compose the social safety net are further starved.

I know people who had applications for state and federal government jobs who said they wanted to continue but couldn't live that way.

As said by a DUer who was furloughed during the Gingrich shut down, things were delayed so much that people died. There were not enough people to do the paper work and approve claims for payment for those with life-threatening illnesses and it was fatal.

I talked to a provider who had not gotten a payment from Medicare since January who said, 'I guess Medicare doesn't care.' To which I replied, the Sequester started at that time and there are not enough people to do the paper work.

It was like a light went off for that person. Many do not connect what the GOP is doing with their lives right now. All they hear is Obama this and Obama that.

The GOP tricks in D. C. are hurting real people, just as intended. And they aren't going to stop doing it.

because they are the ones that will be blamed like in the Clinton years

16. Unfortunately, many people I know don't have enough savings to cover one month's expenses...

And they aren't wingnuts, but I get your point. They are creating so much fear with this stuff people can hardly think straight, as many do not have any reserves after years of all that they've endured. Your point is well taken, but this kind of thing is hard on most of the poor, elderly and disabled who do not have resources. They are struggling to get to the end of the month.

18. Yup. I hope the party fractures and still doesn't get the shut down. Tired of the GOP terrorists.

It is likely not the official defintion, but it certainly scares some people more than 9/11 or the recent headliners.

It's deeply personal and it's cruel to play games with those who can't fight back. Seems to be one of their traits...

I know you understand. Thanks for the thoughtful responses.

13. Louie Ghomert State Mensa Center

After reading so much about Louie I decided to drive to Tyler to visit the new Louie Ghomert Texas State Mensa center. When I arrived I was impressed!! An existing structure had been re-purposed and remodeled. Someone did a great job because you can hardly tell it was an old phone booth. The Center is located in the Northwest corner of Joe's Bar and Grill. The Center has worked out a deal with Joe and now there are restroom facilities as well as dining facilities. From the looks of things it has enough room to serve Texans for many years to come.

23. When Congress Comes Back In Session

They will have 9 working days to resolve the 7 remaining authorization bills in order for the country to not shut down. That spells big trouble. Obama has already said that he will veto any bill that extends sequestration so that is a line in the sand for a continuing resolution to fund government at current spending levels. Congress has had 11 months to write these laws and have come up blank so kicking the can down the road one more time makes no sense whatsoever. What would make the most sense right now is for the Senate to do the House's job, write the bills and send them to the House where the Speaker would need to bring them to a floor vote despite the Hastert Rule.

The budget is supposed to be the blueprint for the spending authorization bills. Both branches of Congress have passed budget bills. Protocol calls for a joint committee to iron out differences and send the budget to the President. He cannot veto a budget. Boehner has steadfastly refused to name House members for that joint committee so we have no budget even though he is required by the rules to do just that. Technically Boehner is in contempt of Congress. The clock has run out for a budget at this time because of the dysfunction in the House. That is why we now need to turn to the Senate to move things forward. Even that doesn't look like it can work.

And no sooner than this occurs we have the debt ceiling to once again deal with.....
