Mark Sanford wins election for South Carolina House seat

Source: Yahoo News

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. --Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford defeated Democratic businesswoman Elizabeth Colbert Busch in a special House election for South Carolina's first congressional district, despite an expansive effort among Democrats to turn the district blue for the first time in more than 30 years.

The district seat, which was left open when former Republican Rep. Tim Scott was appointed to the Senate earlier this year, will remain in Republican hands. Before the results came in Tuesday, the seat appeared closer to going Democratic than at any time in the past thirty years.

Sanford, a candidate plagued by scandal after he admitted using public funds to leave the country to visit an Argentine mistress while governor, defeated 15 Republicans earlier this year to secure the party nomination. With help from a solidly Republican district, Sanford overcame his past by arguing that the race was a referendum on President Barack Obama's policies, and that a vote for Colbert Busch would be synonymous with support for liberal Democrats like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

With his blemished past, Democrats saw a rare opportunity to take control of the seat. Had they been successful, the victory would have been an important symbolic victory that would have provided momentum for Democrats working to rebuild their majority in the House.

She's a SC politico, so she would have found herself personna non grata if she had endorsed Colbert-Busch or been more overt. But, she certainly did what she could from the background.

You do realize the number 3 Democrat in the House is from SC? The longest serving mayor of a large city in the South is Joe Riley, the progressive Democratic mayor of Charleston? Columbia has a Democratic mayor? Yes, it's a 55/45 republican state, and gerrymandering has made it near impossilbe to win 6 of the 7 congressional seats, but your blanket bigotry is not very becoming.

The voter turnout so far was only 19%. This means only the political right showed up. This group is fueled by a love of the Confederacy and a hatred of women, the north, people who live on the coasts, and minorities.

This provides us with a giant anchor to hang on the neck of the GOP. Sometimes a terrible Republican helps us more than a Democrat does because every time their face is shown on television the approval rating of the party drops. Sanford is the type of politician that is so awful that he actually ends up helping us drag his party down.

But it indicates that the GOP may remain in control of everything in 2014.
No matter how idiotic and morally corrupt the GOP is the voters don't care.

Besides, how do you monitor a voting machine? How do you verify a touchscreen voting machine?

Here's Brad's take:

The unverified and unverifiable computer-reported results tonight led PPP's Tom Jensen to tweet: "I feel bad about our SC-1 polling, I'd feel worse if there had been any indication from any other polling that Sanford landslide was coming".

Neither Jensen nor PPP should feel bad. There was no more indication that a "landslide was coming", than there is proof tonight that it actually came.

We explained last month, in detail, why the votes cast in this race on SC's oft-failed, easily-manipulated ES&S iVotronic touch-screen voting system would be 100% unverifiable. As Vic Rawl, a Colbert Busch supporter and the man who inexplicably "lost" to Alvin Green told us at the time, no matter what the results would be tonight, no matter how inexplicable they might be, "the fact is, there's not a darn thing that anybody can do about it."

While it's completely possible that PPP's pre-election numbers were entirely wrong, or that the disgraced Sanford legitimately, somehow, achieved an 18 point turnaround in just two weeks, the voters of SC will never know one way or another if he did or didn't. Once again, we have another 100% unverifiable faith-based election in the world's once-greatest democracy.

67. I didn't

give her much of a chance from the start. I would have been very surprised if she had won. This is South Carolina and you have to understand the history. You just as well be in the Deep South once you leave North Carolina and enter South Carolina. Remember, this is the first state that seceded before the Civil War. It is where the Confederacy and secession was born. It is also where the birth of the new State's Rights Movement began ned under Strom Thurmond, who was once a Democrat. South Carolina is one of the few States he carried.

I think there is one Democratic representative in South Carolina and that person is a Blackman. His District is majority Black too. The only way Democrats will change South Carolina,is if New people move to that State. And they are definitely against immigration. That is what's happening to North Carolina and Virginia. They have a large African American population but most whites are Republican. Strom Thurmond died in office. He is a legend in that State.

107. But that's untrue. That district is NOT getting the government they deserve.

They still get $2.13 for every dollar they send to that Big Bad Gubment {Federal welfare}, and they still get social security, public school funding, medicare, medicaid, and all the goodies the Democratic Party and Unions in other states have worked hard for, while still having the luxury to vote for Republicans who are against these programs but who belong to the party that has the least Blacks, Mexicuns, and Ayshuns.

In essence, those Sanford voters are having their cake and eating it, too.

Now, if every state were forced to live under the policies of the Party they elected, you'd see a major shift from Republican to Democrat in a heartbeat! Sadly, this isn't the case now, so I disagree that these people are getting the government they deserve. They're getting the government they don't deserve.

The district maps are rigged already, but the main factor is going to be voter turnout. The right and Republicans are going to be energized with gun control, immigration, gay marriage, abortion, etc like always.

The question is will the left and Democrats be energized to get to the polls next year? I'm not seeing it at this point, it will be a tough midterm for us I think with all the circumstances.

Vice President Biden, U.S. Sen. Cruz headline party fundraisers

A little more than a year after the last presidential primary in South Carolina, the next one gets an unofficial start Friday night.

Vice President Joe Biden and Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas ó two presumed 2016 White House hopefuls ó are the keynote speakers at the state's annual Democratic and Republican fundraising dinners in Columbia.

Their Friday night appearances enhance the state's stature as the home of the first presidential primary in the South, political observers said.

With Biden as the speaker, Democrats sold a record 1,000-plus tickets for the S.C. Democratic Party's Jefferson Jackson Dinner at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

The party expects to double last year's money haul from the fundraiser, S.C. Democratic Party chairman Dick Harpootlian said. Ticket sales are used to help pay for party operations and campaigns.

While a U.S. senator, Biden spoke at the Jefferson Jackson Dinner in 2005, the year after Republican George W. Bush won a second presidential term.

Biden sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008 but, after a poor finish in Iowa, dropped out before the S.C. primary. However, he went on to become Barack Obama's running mate.

Now in his second term as vice president, Biden, 70, is speaking to the state's Democrats again in the year after a president has won a second four-year stint.

But don't look for more coincidences, Harpootlian said.
Instead, S.C. Democrats are welcoming an old friend in Biden, who vacations at Kiawah Island and wants to honor U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn's 20 years in Congress, Harpootlian said. Biden will attend the Columbia Democrat's annual fish fry, near Williams-Brice Stadium, after the dinner.

``This is not a gauge for 2016,'' Harpootlian said.

But not everyone thinks that Biden's visit is just about honoring Clyburn and getting some fried fish.
Despite former f irst l ady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's lead in early polls, Biden ``keeps himself as an option in 2016 by attending (the dinner),'' University of South Carolina political scientist Mark Tompkins said.

"Iím glad that we donít have another BUSCH in politics.

Damned, Iím beginning to sound like a Democrat."

"No, this guy is a real loser. But itís still probably better having him win than having another Democrat elected, from a conservative district."

"I just wish we had had a better candidate. And it would not have taken much to find one."

And another freeper suggested: "I think the dirty little secret of Sanfordís win, that nobody is talking about, is gun control. I have a feeling their are a LOT of gun owners who normally donít even vote, but intend to go out of their way to punish the democrats in 2014, and this was just the first shot across the bow. That is the only way I can explain how a race that was suppose to be a dead heat, is ending up being a 8-10 point blowout."

Being a part of a political entity where these people hold any power is like being a passenger in a drunk driver's car. I can't think of a single issue on which I agree with these people. How long is it going to take before we go our separate ways? Let them descend back into the swamps of filth and superstition from which they crawled - and apparently feel most comfortable - and we can go about setting up a decent society and trying to repair damage.
