Obama: Sexual Assault In Military Is ‘Betraying The Uniform’ (VIDEO)

Source: TPM

President Obama said Tuesday that someone who engages in for sexual assault in the military is "betraying the uniform," responding to a Pentagon report estimating that there are 70 sexual assaults involving military personnel each day.

"I have no tolerance for this," Obama said during a joint press conference with South Korean President Park Geun-hye at the White House. "I have communicated this to the secretary of defense. We're gonna communicate this again to folks up and down the chain in areas of authority. And I expect consequences."

He continued: "If we find out somebody's engaging in this stuff, they've got to be held accountable: Prosecuted, stripped of their positions, court-martialed, fired, dishonorably discharged, period."

The report comes just after news that the Air Force officer who led the branch's Sexual Assault Prevention and Response unit was himself arrested for sexual battery in Virginia.

1. I can only hope for the penalties the President listed. We

shall see if the brass is any more enlightened than their track records indicate. This latest abomination certainly provides ample opportunity to demonstrate resolve.

2. MTI's at Lackland AFB

As someone who once wore Air Force blue, I am ashamed of this, just as I was over the Military Training Instructors (AF version of Drill Instructors) at Lackland AFB who were convicted some time ago.

http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/military/article/Convicted-trainers-clean-Lackland-kennel-4416666.php

I don't have any gripes about such a lowlife being forced to clean dogshit out of kennels...especially if said military working dogs were in close proximity and scaring the shit out of them.

When I went through BMT, the MTI's were profane, loud, and threatened to beat the shit out of us (though I never saw it actually happen) but I hadn't heard of any sexual assaults. Of course that was decades ago.

President Obama is right...and as CinC of all five Armed Services he can lean on the people with lots of scrambled eggs/farts and darts on their caps to make sure something gets done.

My first night in BMT was spent learning the entire Chain of Command from the President down to my flight's MTI. When the shit starts rolling downhill...the closer it gets to the bottom the worse it stinks.

The light colonel who was arrested is even more culpable, since he's an officer, and was supposed to be stopping this kind of BS.

3. At Lackland in 1999

I attended tech school as a prior-service reservist. My instructor, as well as several others in the squadron, were later found to be having sex with the students.

Not enough is being done to prevent this.

7. Too many MTI's think they're God

For some of them the hat isn't enough to hold the swelled ego they get, when in reality they're just barely a step up from the trainees. Some of them would have you believe that they ARE the Air Force and that

1999 was well after I was there.

One big flaw that I remember in the system was allowing E-4's to be MTI's (back then E-4 encompassed both SrA and Sgt). When you're an E-4 you haven't any bloody judgement. An SrA isn't even an NCO and they probably haven't been to Airman Leadership School. None of the other services allow E-4's to be recruit instructors.

I also remember not seeing many officers, except for doctors/nurses, at least early on. My MTI was completely different around officers, even second lieutenants. When he was alone with us he turned on his "I AM GOD, AND I COMPLETELY CONTROL YOUR LIFE AND DESTINY, DOWN TO WHEN YOU CAN USE THE LATRINE," but when there were officers around he cooled down a lot.

I would bet that kind of mentality - the power-tripping over a scared young recruit - is no small contributor to this BS.

4. Obama is right

I think what he is saying is something both sides can agree on. If someone does this, they need to be gone. I feel like a lot of times they tend to sweep these things under the bus rather than getting rid of the freak that's doing it all.

8. We HOPE both sides can agree on

Republicans have got so obstinate that I can see some chickenshit chickenhawk Tea Partier who never served a day in uniform trying to obstruct Obama (who IS after all the COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF) on anything he might try to do over this. Hell's bells, they went into "eat their own" mode trying to block Chuck Hagel as SECDEF!

10. That dishonorable discharge would also give fair warnings to their future contacts, employers, etc.

AFAIK, that is a serious consequence.

12. Any OTH discharge is bad news

I thank God I have a piece of paper saying "Honorable Discharge."

Getting out with bad paper; i.e., an OTH (Other Than Honorable), will be a drag on you for the rest of your life.

A BCD (Bad Conduct Discharge, referred to as the "Big Chicken Dinner") is bad. A DD...may as well defect to another country, if they will have you.

6. Obama is definitely right on this.

And I think I saw Chuck Hagel is right in line with this also. There should be zero tolerance for this behavior. I have been sick at heart since hearing of that Lt Col overseas getting his guilt overturned by some asshole general. Hope he follows through.
