Poll: 29% Think Armed Rebellion Might Soon Be Necessary

Source: TPM

SAHIL KAPUR MAY 1, 2013, 3:53 PM

Three in 10 registered American voters believe an armed rebellion might be necessary in the next few years, according to the results of a staggering poll released Wednesday by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind.

The survey, aimed at measuring public attitudes toward gun issues, found that 29 percent of Americans agree with the statement, “In the next few years, an armed revolution might be necessary in order to protect our liberties.” An additional five percent were unsure.

Eighteen percent of Democrats said an armed revolt “might be necessary,” as compared to 27 percent of independents and 44 percent of Republicans. Support levels were similar among males and females but higher among less educated voters.

14. armed rebellion?

As I've said, these are the nuts who say they need guns to protect themselves against the gu'mmint, but enthusiastically support giving the US military more money to buy bigger weapons that will be used to kill them in an "armed rebellion".

The NRA and weapon manufacturers are the only winners.

13. that is exactly the problem

there is no agreement on what is to be fought for
The right doesn't understand what rights they are fighting for, they have been so fired up by the gun lobby and right wing talk radio that they don't even know what is really going on. That their rights have already been usurped and corporations have taken over everything or soon will. They think it is about religion and guns.
While us on the left fear the complete break down of democracy and society.
So people answer yes for completely different reasons.
I personally fear the break down of society from the effects of climate change (no food) and or economic collapse from the failure of the financial system. Guns are a big question.

My choices and those of tens of millions of Americans do not pose a danger to others, and those choices include the legal possession of a firearm.

106. Progressive does not mean letting children have guns

You appear to be confusing your libertarian or anarchist views with progressive Democratic views.
If I remember correctly the last "let 'em keep their gun" vote featured the five RW Supremes.
So if you are to their right, who the hell are you to accuse me of not being progressive.
Your views certainly do pose a danger to others, to the tune of 80 or more dead per day and many more injured.

107. I have seen nothing to indicate you are progressive.

It is only your opinion that responsible parents should not let children who are trained properly to have guns under due supervision. It is only your opinion that such a peculiar stance would be stamped "progressive Democratic views." My views do not pose a danger to others, you think they do, but that is another of your opinions.

The "80 or more dead per day" constitute how many homicides committed by veteran felons, who for some reason still roam the streets? How many suicides?

28 percent of 'Murkins believed that Boosh** was doing a dandy job. At the end of his second "term".

So you take that 28 percent and add one percent of far lefties who advocate armed rebellion, and you're there.

Could this have anything to do with it?

Support levels were similar among males and females but higher among less educated voters.

edit: I believe a similar percentage believes that Obama is Muslim.

since most armed rebellions don't work as advertised.

It won't be in the near future, either.

What I do know is that the longer conservatives in both parties insist on the business as usual that is destroying American lives and families by shortchanging labor and shoving all wealth to the rich, a violent upheaval becomes more inevitable.

The lesson of history is very clear on that account.

79. Think first

The available US military strength is around 2.3 million persons at any given time. The amount of veterans of that military system is about 20x current strength. How many of those persons are on one side or the other? Some of us were trained by the greatest guerrilla army ever, the Viet Cong. How many of those currently serving will fire upon their families? How many will see this as a rich vs poor event?
Carefully consider who might be willing to fight and why. If it happens EVERYTHING ends.

19. That 44% will go down to 5% next time there's a Republican President.

You oppose a Republican President, and you are an unpatriotic traitor. But when there's a Democratic President, you can and should call the President derogatory terms, assume he is responsible for every bad thing that happens, and call for his execution. That's just called "not being a sheeple".

Did anybody talk about "militias" while Bush/Cheney were in office and actually giving the green light to indefinite detention and torture (granted, they weren't indefinitely detaining and torturing white people but still.....)? The last time anybody talked about militias and armed rebellion was, surprise surprise, the last time a Democrat was in office. It's deja vu all over again...........

20. I wonder how many of this "29%" would lose their stomach for rebellion as soon as they faced a burst

of coax from a Bradley Fighting Vehicle or a tank.

More than 1,000 meters up to 3,000 meters away the standard ammunition for engaging dismounts is 25mm HE in a Bradley. For those who've never fired a rifle, 300 meters with iron sites is a challenge. They'd be dead before they even saw the vehicle that engaged them.

36. I'm a pragmatist

I'd like to know how they think this "armed rebellion" would actually work.

Will they collectively select a day, go out and shoot all police, military and government personnel they can find? In a small town with two police officers, this may be doable, but how could they take out the police force of say, New York City? And how do they think they could overcome the security at military bases? Do they think no one would fight back?

Will they go door to door and kill anyone who admits to voting Democratic or is a different race or religion or maybe just an annoying neighbor?

What are their plans when the military shows up in force and out numbers them, out guns them and out shoots them?

IMHO, they can stockpile all the guns and ammo they would like, but they lack the cohesiveness and planning capability to do anything more than get themselves killed in a spectacular manner. In reality, this all smacks of a bunch of drunks at a bar pounding their chests and doing nothing.

except for the "getting themselves killed in a spectacular manner". It wouldn't be spectacular. Lightly-armed dismounted Infantry does last more than a few seconds against a mechanized unit. I've seen how groups of hillbillies armed with assault rifles fare against my own tanks and brads when I was in Iraq in 2004. It never once ended in their favor.

well trained mechanized Infantry > lightly armed hillbillies every time.

I said this in another thread, but what a waste of life that would be.

65. Not as insignificant as some think.

There was a time when the idea of the fledgling American Nation gaining it's independence from Britain was largely a joke. There was a time when the idea of Hitler ever ruling a Country, or coming into real power, was truly laughable. There was a time when we would have scoffed at the notion of really despicable, really enormous, perfectly legal bribes in congress and the Senate - remember Citizens United? I hammer on this issue a lot, because until we can do something about Citizens United... then we are living not in a democracy, but within a plutocracy.

I'm not the fighting type. I don't own guns - in fact, they scare the crap out of me. Still, I do some times wonder if the greed, corruption, and terrible policies of our "representatives" will force some kind of conflict with people who have nothing left (not even hope). I also wonder if the severe divide between the right and the left will inevitably result in some sort of ideological war. This poll provides (some) evidence that a number of people believe that something can be solved, or improved, through armed rebellion...

Let's consider though, that those on the right, generally speaking, have far more weapons and far more current and former military men and women. The primary advantage on the left is numbers - and the fact that (I truly believe) we are more compassionate, more empathetic and generally more peaceful than the other side. Still, a peaceful nature or a well reasoned argument is not going to convince our opponents that armed revolution is a bad idea....

There are times when I am tempted to retreat into the wilderness and live as a hermit. Should it ever come to war between the right and left... it will not be so small as some seem to think.

76. Think about all this for some more moments.

The article isn't just about conservatives who think along these lines. It also mentions measurable percentages of liberals and independents thinking this way. All these groups may be considering the potential need for revolution regarding totally different rights (gun rights on the right, economic disparity on the left, over taxation in the middle, etc.) But they are all thinking of taking the same action, while not thinking to act now because they don't feel they have the critical mass of support needed.

To my mind, the schism between left and right, rather than fostering an urge for revolution, has instead been acting to quell that urge, to divide it between groups and make each feel it is a smaller part. It is when these groups find something that unites them that there will be a real possibility for troubles. What you mention, ie: that since Citizens United we are really living in a plutocracy, not a democracy(or, more accurately, a republic) could be just such a catalyst, as a lot of groups who are currently at odds could see that they are facing the same foe.

That's not happening right now because all groups are suffering from severe bouts of cognitive dissonance, which keeps them from recognizing any shared commonalities that may exist. (Frankly, that has been a self sustaining condition since the early/mid '90s, if not longer.)

I was concerned about the Occupy protests, as they pretty clearly pointed at our plutocracy. I feared that could have ignited into a joint cause. My fears were allayed when it became obvious that cognitive dissonance on the right keeps them (currently) immune do any such empathy with 'dirty, protesting hippies.'

These thoughts are troubling to me. History shows that revolutions, besides being horrifyingly bloody and disruptive, also tend to wind up bringing about end results that are far, far different than any idealistic dreams the revolutionaries had in mind, especially when all the revolutionaries have different ideas about what the final results should be. In hindsight, the American and French revolutions may have been anomalies, possible only due to circumstances that existed at a unique point in time. Statistically, you are far more likely to come out the other end with fascist or communistic totalitarianism, rather than democracy.

Hermitage in the wild could well be a very attractive option.

I especially agree with your second paragraph. Our puppet masters keep beating the strange rhythm made easier by Citzens United, in order to keep the left/right dance from achieving any semblance of grace. We're not waltzing here, and that ill-kept time is spoiling the dance while crunching all of our toes. Instead of Citzens United we should be united citizens and take back the drum that is rightfully ours. We are the dancers AND the musicians.

96. You make some excellent points.

I'm not sure I can really imagine anything though, that would be enough to unite the right and the left. An invasion from over-seas, perhaps. What it will really come down to (I believe) is having a common enemy, that is, someone or some group that is overwhelmingly seen by the populace as evil, as wrong, as tyrannical. Even then though... eight years of the Bush administration had many on the left screaming for revolution, but on the right I believe the common consensus was... "We won, them durn libruls need ta git over it." Or, maybe, "This is America. If you dun like it you can git out."

Citizens United, I believe, is the clearest indication of all that nearly everything in this Nation is for sale to the highest bidder. The problem is, there are a number of free market fanatics that think even THAT is a good idea - more on the right than on the left.

Revolution would be awful and ugly... but I wonder if the alternative is any better? Accept what has happened... get used to lower wages, fewer benefits, closing schools... profit over progress...

Something has to change, there must be a solution that prevents civil war or the worsening of our current state of plutocracy. Otherwise, I fear that an armed rebellion is inevitable. You can only take so much away from the working class before they have nothing left to eat, before they're ready to start doing something about it...

90. I'm No Fan Of Hypothetical Questions Like This

That poll things that are not part of an ongoing discussion on an issue because people are blindsided and give snap answers.

That said, it is very disturbing that a snap answer by a plurality of Republican think it might be necessary in the future to have an armed rebellion. What wild conspiracy is Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh planting in their heads that would make them think this? I don't think it can be Obamacare. Today in a Townhall meeting in NH Sen. Ayotte answered a question on what specifically is the problem with universal background checks she answered that it is the beginning of creating a gun registry with the implied threat that the feds would then come and take your guns. It's like a commentator said, Sen. Ayotte needs to spend less time on the Internet gathering her talking points and more time reading the actual bill since the bill she voted to filibuster specifically prohibited providing the names of those applying to purchase a weapon to be given to the government. Sen. Ayotte even alluded to needing to water down the existing background checks.

I don't know the answer to this self-radicalization that leads to such extreme expression where a plurality of Republicans think an armed overthrow of the government may become necessary. A boycott of advertisers of Rush Limbaugh has had some success so maybe doubling down there and expanding it to Beck, Hannity, etc. would work. That could lead to a backlash where the loony's would boycott Rachel Maddow, but so be it. Joseph McCarthy was defeated when confronted with "have you no shame". We have seen that there are no Republicans with enough stature to do that with Limbaugh as even mild criticism of Limbaugh always leads to them issuing an apology to Limbaugh, so the problem lives on.

on racial terms but if you notice, most of the Republican Party is white and the majority of their voters are in the South and rural areas of the United States. Most Democratic voters are in urban areas and populous states.

If you look at the only Civil War in this Country, it was the same dynamics between the South and North. The Democratic Party is more diverse, which represents all of America more. If you got more extreme, Parties that pushed racial supremacists ideology usually are condemned not only nationally but Worldwide. When the North took up the cause of ending slavery, the South lost all hopes of getting Foreign intervention from England. Nazi Germany was also condemned World wide for pushing a racist agenda. This ideology seems to always come from the Right. They will lose again because they are batting 100 percent in History.

123. Agree Completely

It is an acknowledgement that with the changing demographics in this country that elections may not be allowed to stand, according to this thinking. Of course it will surface as a corollary issue such as the BS about a gun registry but it will continue to be driven by dog whistle politics like Romney's co-chair John Sununu used in the last election cycle. The problem is that with people like Kelly Ayotte, that are not smart enough to deflect on the agenda, they will mess things up for the rest. The other part of this poll that stood out is how the issue sorted out by education level. The less education you have the more likely you are to support armed rebellion so keeping people in school has to be a worthy goal for an expanding list of reasons.

93. an armed rebellion in this country would be no different than one in the middle east.

The rebels would be no match for the US government's powerful bombs and drone attacks. The government would label the rebels as terrorists, the propaganda machine would convince the majority of the population that the rebels were terrorists and the lemmings would support the government turning the country into an all out police state where the government troops went door to to door hunting down the terrorists.

103. soon = when there aren't enough Republicans left in Congress to plausibly surrender to

Even though many Democrats are as business owned as Republicans, once the GOP withers to Lyndon LaRouche size as its base of Jim Crow nostalgic white cranks dies, the Democrats will have to move slightly to the left to prevent the rise of a unified progressive party there.

That's when the right will finish their move from violent rhetoric to violent action, sort of like the Spanish Civil War, or anywhere in the world where fascist lose electoral power.

of a 5 year old to shoot his 2 year old sister is the kind of freedom repubs can wrap their minds around. And if millions have to die for it, well, so be it.

It's a testament to the effectiveness of Fox News in harming the U.S.

110. Poor old Honest Abe! Unreconstructed secessionists have taken over his party

I'm a good old Rebel soldier and that's just what I am
for this "Fair Land of Freedom" I do not give a damn
I'm glad we fit against it. I only wish we'd won
and I do not want no pardon for anything I done

I hates the Constitution, this "Great Republic" too
I hates the Freedman's Bureau and uniforms of blue
I hates the nasty eagle with all its brags and fuss
and the lying thieving Yankees, I hates them worse and worse

I hates the Yankee nation and everything they do
I hates the Declaration of Independence too
I hates the "Glorious Union" -- tis dripping with our blood
and I hates their striped banner and I fit it all I could ...

125. From a statistical basis, this is probably true, but...

When you look at the billions of galaxies in the universe, and assume that 1% have life, there are billions of planets that can support life.

The speed of life is sacrosanct, and warp speed is fiction. So, it is highly unlikely that we have been visited by aliens in the past. But, I am not ruling it out.

111. 30% of the populace believes in UFOs. What's your point?

At any one point it's safe to say that 1/3 of the populace are complete and utter dumbasses.

121. If we tried to pass COMPLETE CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM (CCFR) we would need to arm

ourselves b/c the corporations will not give up the complete control they have over the 3 branches of Government and the media! OWS was just a warm up for what they would be prepared to do if we took to the streets to demand CCFR!

126. The Boston bombers ran out of bullets quickly

As a case in point, the two Boston Bombers had amassed 250 bullets for their wet dream jihad attack. They quickly ran out of bullets. These armchair domestic terrorists who want a violent revolution, will never be able to stockpile enough weapons and ammo to make a dent.

In most revolutions in modern times, the first thing the rebels hit was the police stations and army barracks to secure weapons and ammo. There is far too much security today to make this feasible in the US.

Dream on Rushenistas. Your violent end will come all to soon. Then we can get on with the business of running this county as a democracy.

130. What do you wanna bet?

The majority of those who think it'll be necessary to fight to protect their liberty are the same ones who think it's okay to give up more liberties to fight terrorism, or for that matter, anyone they identify as the 'enemy'. Which would include all of us who read DU. This has nothing to do with liberty. It's about people who just seemed to be hard wired to hate. If they don't have groups to turn their hatred onto they'll invent them.
Note the fact that the #'s are higher among the uneducated - big surprise!

of perceived 'white male' privilege at the bottom of these numbers and white females feel the loss also. Also white fear among the less educated.....you know what, fuck it, let the idiots start something. They will deserve nothing better than a total response from the government. I read on this site over and over again how this segment of the population always go against their own self interest. Instead of going after the real problem, the power mongering money grubbers(uber-rich) who have created this immense social imbalance, the want to focus on liberals, progressives, working people suffering under the yoke of a vicious financial system, and a man of color who's POTUS. Classic example of divide and conquer. Sad indeed.

136. To Those Who Advocate Armed Rebellion

Treason is defined by the Constitution as follows:
"Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. "

Raising an Armed Rebellion is "levying War against the United States." The Army will obey its orders and put down treason.

140. FABBO.

When a couple dozen or a couple hundred of these shitheads take over a little town, mebbe kill a thousand or so people, martial law is declared and the first military outfit called in crushes them like insects, well their little insurrection will be toast.

90% of these people wouldn't know how to defend a position (or assault one) if their lives depended on it. At the point the professionals get involved, all the AR 15's in the world wont do a fucking thing to save them.

Or:
Drones, baby, drones.
