Five confess to gang-raping Swiss tourist in India: Police By AFP Published: March 17, 2013 NEW DELHI: Five villagers have confessed to gang-raping a Swiss tourist in central India, police said Sunday, in an incident that has renewed focus on the rampant violence against women in the country. - snip - The five men, who eke out a living as small-scale farmers, have been arrested on charges of rape and robbery, Dhodee said. Police are searching for a sixth man, who was also involved in the crime, he said. The alleged rapists live in a village near the forested area where the couple had stopped to camp for the night, while on a cycling trip to the popular tourist destination of Agra in northern India, Dhodee said. “They were passing by, noticed the couple putting up their tent and saw an opportunity to attack and rape the woman,” he said. Her husband was tied up during the attack. Read more: http://tribune.com.pk/story/522226/five-confess-to-gang-raping-swiss-tourist-in-india-police/

1. These incidents make me so wary of going to unfamiliar areas
|
Both here at home and abroad. The six tourists that got gang raped in Mexico recently come to mind as well, so tragic.
A coworker is extremely worried about his young sister, she joined the Peace Corps and is going to Africa soon. On a side note, bicycling in India!!! That sounds like a death wish, have you seen the driving over there? |

2. Thought process

Have to wonder how the mind of this sort of person operates. I know I'm preoccupied with food and have to keep up a constant dialogue of no, you don't need it, you've had enough, yes that is an interesting looking restaurant but you aren't going there, etc.
Is that what impulse crimes are like? Walking along la-di-da. Oh my, there's a rapeable woman, I dare say. And what's this? Her man is small and not dangerous. Come, fellows, are you pondering what I'm pondering? The scary thing is we will be able to test for this. MRI machines can see which centers of the brain light up. Show people pictures of children in vulnerable situations, see which parts light up. If its anything on the sex and appetite side, looks like we have ourselves a bad egg. Can we charge someone with pre-crime? This isn't going to be a science fiction question for much longer. |

3. Occupy protesters are regularly beaten and arrested for non-crimes, which is what

a pre-crime is.

5. Most crime is opportunistic. You've pretty much encapsulated what my clients do before committing

There might be some benefit from research into why this happens. Is it a pre-wired condition? Or is this wiring a result of nurture? |

7. More importantly
|
Does it mean people need to be locked up for life?
Some people with a weird kind of impulse control have the moral injunction against violence and yet can't resist the urge and this suffer from guilt. This differs from those who never regret. Does it mean that some people will need to be cloistered away from temptation for the good of all? And is it a different kind of jailing? This guy only wants to rape little girls so is a non-risk offender in an all-male community? Creates some fascinating and scary questions that defies our normal moral ordering of things. |

8. They should be shot.

There should be zero tolerance for this sickening crime. I am so sick of men getting off leniently on this shit.
