Autistic Child Found Living In A Cage In O’Fallon, MO

Source: Local Fox TV in St. Louis

O’FALLON, MO (KTVI) – The parents of an autistic child who was found locked in a cage in an O’Fallon, Missouri basement are now facing felony Child Endangerment charges.

Victoria Smith and Terry Smith of O’Fallon, MO will be officially charged with felony Endangering the Welfare of a Child in the First Degree sometime this afternoon. The St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney’s office will file the charges after a two-and-a-half year investigation.

According to the prosecutor’s office, on December 15, 2010, O’Fallon Police and Missouri Social Services officials went to the home on Half Moon Drive after an anonymous tip was called into the Missouri Child Abuse and Neglect hotline. When officers arrived, they found a six-year-old autistic child in a cage. The boy was reportedly naked and sitting in urine and feces.

The child was being kept in a 3-foot wide by 3-foot tall make-shift cage that was held together with zip ties, tension straps and bungee cords.

There are more details in the rest of the article.
The person who called in the anonymous tip is a hero.

There's a video at the link now. The children were removed from the home in 2010 and later returned. The case was recently re-opened.

3. Over 2 years to intervene? Is that correct?

Dreadful story, for sure.

4. It doesn't sound like it

I think the children were immediately removed from the home, but after a 2-1/2 year investigation the parents have been charged.

9. Endangerment, my @$$

This is ABUSE. Plain and simple. I raised an autistic child, and lord knows it's not easy, but you do NOT put a child in a cage. Ever. Not even an autistic one. Yes, it's overwhelming sometimes, but you wouldn't keep an animal in this kind of condition.....or maybe they would, who knows. Why did they reopen the case? Are the parents caging him again? And WHY did they return the kids in the first place?

11. Justice delayed...

...is justice denied. And they can't even find them. The children are still in their custody. And they appear to be on the run. Way to go, MISSOURI.
