Guns in US schools: South Dakota votes to allow teachers to be armed
Saturday 09 March 2013

South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard signed a bill yesterday allowing the state's school districts to arm teachers and other personnel with guns.

Supporters say the so-called sentinels could help prevent tragedies such as the Connecticut school shooting in December. The law will go into effect July 1.

The measure reflects a growing divide in the US between those like President Barack Obama who believe guns need to be more strictly regulated and supporters of the powerful gun lobby the National Rifle Association which maintains that more guns keep people safer.

Several representatives of school boards, school administrators and teachers opposed the bill during committee testimony last month. They said the measure could make schools more dangerous, lead to accidental shootings and put guns in the hands of people who are not adequately trained to shoot in emergency situations.

1. Yeah, until a teacher leaves it in her purse

and a kid that wants to take out his classmates now has access to a gun

2. I feel so sad Tom Daschle comes from this state. and..memo to myself

do NOT drive through or visit South Dakota.

Use a different route when going from NY to Seattle.

(same with Arizona and the other draconian states).

and why oh why does Tom Daschle have to come from there.
He is too good a person.
And the state is too far to the right for a good liberal like Tom.

3. This is always the response I get from gun advocates.

Had there been MORE guns at Columbine, it never would have continued. Oh right. How can you argue with such logic? Had there been a holiday called on that fateful day, none of the children would have been slaughtered either. Such lunacy we have to deal with in this country.

You can't even suggest stopping the sale of assault weapons and magazines; because it means we are "taking away their 2nd Amendment rights". I'm just fed up with such wood heads.

5. Legislators find money for guns but can't find any for reading and/or teachers.

6. Arithmetic: Armed loon bursts into classroom, shoots teacher, now has 2 guns

Will the schools also pay for the teachers' frequent training, training materials (ammo is expensive), and liability insurance? What about criminal and civil liability issues-- any way to make them immune, or will they have the same deal as cops? And if they choose *not* to carry, will they be held liable for that choice if they have an armed loon shooting up their class?

And my last question, wasn't there a thread on this yesterday?

Oh, here it is http://www.democraticunderground.com/1014419344

11. Alternatively, petrified teacher juiced to the gills on adrenaline freaks out...

... and wildly shoots up the room trying to stop the assailant and inadvertently kills nearly as many children as the assailant manages to kill intentionally.

7. Remember teachers you had. Now imagine them participating in a shootout 10 feet from you.
