Giffords gets Profile in Courage award

Source: CNN

(CNN) -- Gabrielle Giffords, the former congresswoman from Arizona who was shot and wounded in a 2011 shooting, has been named this year's recipient of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award, the JFK Library said.

Giffords, who has embarked on gun control efforts with her husband Mark Kelly despite the injury she suffered from the shooting, is being honored for her "political, personal, and physical courage she has demonstrated in her fearless public advocacy for policy reforms aimed at reducing gun violence."

"Gabby Giffords has inspired the world with her bravery and her dedication to making change through the political process," said Caroline Kennedy, president of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation. "Instead of retreating following the tragic shooting that ended her Congressional career, she has recommitted herself to fighting for a more peaceful society free from hate and violence. She is a true Profile in Courage."

Caroline Kennedy first announced this on the CBS morning chat show in the 8.30 AM segment.

2. She was pro-gun before she got shot. Is this the only way to turn pro-gunners against guns? nt

Ms. Gifford is smarter and stronger than people give her credit for.

11. Absurd analogy: cars aren't *designed* to kill or wound pedestrians or other drivers. Guns are.

Simply amazing the amount of pro-NRA fluff that washes up at DU under the guise of "pro gun progressive"* thought.

12. Nice sig line.

'RKBA,' 'pro-2nd amendment,' 'pro gun rights' = right-wing code phrases for racism, sexism, homophobia, and hate. Defenders of use of said terms are enablers of - if not outright collaboraters with - those who traffic in racist, sexist, homophobic and otherwise hateful memes, period. It is that simple.

25. It's homophobic and sexist.

And the member, remarkably, wears it with pride.

I'm certain that such a person is young, uneducated or miseducated, has little if any experience with intimate relationships, and lets their frustrations express themselves on the internet.

How sad.

13. Except, the claim is a distortion of Ms. Gifford's views: she certainly *DOESN'T* "support the 2nd

amendment" in the same sense that any of the "pro gun progressives"* who've swarmed this thread do: for crying out loud, she was just with her husband up on Capitol Hill lobbying for sensible firearms legislation that our "RKBA enthusiasts" (see sig line) spent a good deal of time howling and moaning against.

When one of our "pro gun progressives"** starts spouting off about "supporting the 2nd amendment," what he means is the Wayne LaPierre/NRA definition of "supporting the 2nd amendment," which is to say: more military-style assault rifles and 30 round Glock handguns in more places in more hands with fewer restrictions on how to get them; when Gabby Gifford's talks about "supporting the 2nd amendment" it's about the legitimate uses for firearms in our society, i.e., hunting, sports shooting, and reasonable home defense.

Hell, I've seen several "RKBA enthusiasts" claim right here on DU that the 2nd amendment requires we train kids in school how to have shootouts with their classmates, just in case. That definition of the 2nd amendment is not Gabby Gifford's.

18. "Please post that link" - No. Go get yourself a star and then do a search on your pal "slackmaster"

posts. That's a recurring theme of his all over DU: put the NRA into the classroom in the name of phony "gun safety," and let them kiddos discover the joy of becoming newly-minted "RKBA enthusiasts" ready at the drop of a Red Dawn DVD to start returning fire.

Of course, you know precisely what I'm talking about, as I've seen you give slack numerous kudos when he's posted those absurd proposals, so it was a rhetorical question in any event. Nice try: go do your own work.

29. Define "pro-gun" and "against guns."

And I despise the NRA, for the record. Nor would I most likely ever own firearms.

*Edit: I also wholeheartedly agree with stricter gun laws. I just don't find it a realistic, never mind desirable, goal to ban all guns.

30. In all honesty, hearing her struggle to speak now, it's a little hard not to feel sorry for her.

But I can certainly respect her attempts to come back from such a devastating injury.
