Benedict promises obedience to successor

By NICOLE WINFIELD

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope Benedict XVI promised his "unconditional reverence and obedience" to his successor in his final words to cardinals Thursday, a poignant and powerful farewell delivered hours before he becomes the first pope in 600 years to resign.

In an unexpected speech inside the Vatican's frescoed Clementine Hall, the pontiff appeared to be trying to defuse concerns about possible conflicts arising from the peculiar situation of having both a reigning pope and a retired one.

He also gave a final set of instructions to the "princes" of the church who will elect his successor, urging them to be united as they huddle to choose the 266th leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics.

"May the College of Cardinals work like an orchestra, where diversity - an expression of the universal church - always works toward a higher and harmonious agreement," he said.

3. He had his fun.

He got to go through all the wardrobes at the Vatican and try on all the pretty clothes. He's even got pictures of himself wearing them. I think that's all he ever really wanted to do.

4. Dude! Saw this headline and thought Benedict Cumberbatch was leaving Sherlock.

I really don't pay any attention to what's happening in the RC church, since it is seldom anything good. That guy has always looked like evil incarnate in a fancy dress to me.

14. Well, that Church sure hasn't stayed classy.

With everything it's done over the centuries it deserves every bit of derision people throw at it.

17. Oh yeah. A pox on all major religions. Except Buddhism -- they're kinda chill and I like that.

The thing is Christianity is the most powerful and domineering and thus damaging religion in this country and therefore the one that I reserve most of my disdain for. But religions around the world are used as tools of power to oppress women, gays and other non-dominant groups. They're mythology-based and they suck. So, yeah, give me a religion-free world and I'll be a happy person.

8. "Unconditional reverence and obedience."

How I hate those words applied to any human being in authority.

12. I don't read Latin

But I imagine its a plan to make sure that the next pope steers clear of any further investigation of Vatican sex parties and Benny's role in pedo cover-ups.

It must be tough to go from literally talking to God every day, the only one on the planet that gets that privilege, and the next day God shuts you out and you hear nothing like the rest of us schmucks.

18. I'm sure he did -

especially any order from the new pope about not talking to strangers or discussing Vatican secrets.
