Health Canada warns of synthetic marijuana risks

Source: CBC

Health Canada has issued a public warning about the risks associated with herbal incense that may give a high similar to marijuana, following a CBC News investigation into the substances.

The investigation found that the herbal incense products, which are available in stores from St. John's to Vancouver, contain explicit health warnings that they are not for human consumption.

However, undercover reporters have found stores where staff suggested the incense is meant to be smoked.

In a statement issued Wednesday, a day after results from the CBC News investigation were made public, Health Canada warned consumers about the risk associated with those products.

2. Of course natural marijuana is amazingly low risk.

Which explains the ongoing effort to make it unavailable.

3. This is one reason why real marijuana should be legalized

I would much rather have people smoking a plant that has been in use for thousands of years without a single fatality than smoking a substance which we really don't know much about and is likely far more dangerous than the real thing.

7. It's not even that it isn't legal...

It's that it doesn't yet show up in drug tests ... or at least most tests. If pot is legalized, that doesn't guarantee your place of work won't test for it - as is the case in some areas where it's legal now. I have a few friends who smoke spice and it's illegal to buy here, but they smoke it because it doesn't show up on their piss tests yet. It isn't because they have a more difficult time buying the real stuff (in fact, it's probably easier finding a dealer who sells the real stuff) ... but that they don't want to risk their jobs smoking the real pot. Once spice is easily detected on all forms of drug tests, it will die out because that's really the only reason it survives in many of these areas (and yes, it helps it's legal in some places ... but that's changing).

10. Excellent point. One more unintended consequence of drug war totalitarianism.

Since most drugs clear your system in a day or two, but pot can stay for weeks, employment drug testing is primarily aimed at pot smokers. Now, workers who want to keep their jobs resort to worse--but undetectable--drugs.

I wonder what workers could ever do to get out from under employment drug testing. Maybe they could all get together and form a group to represent them for their mutual benefit and confront the bosses to get rid of it....Nah.

9. NOT synthetic -- totally FAKE marijuana.

"Synthetic" suggests a man-made version of the natural drug. These are different drugs, whose effects are mostly poorly known.

12. I read a horrific story from the Daily Mail (yeah, I know) about a teenager left blind and partly

paralyzed by a reaction to some MJ substitute or other. Obviously that's just one freak case, but I've never heard of anything like that happening to a weed smoker. Just saying.
