Three people have been killed and seven injured during a shooting at a factory near the Swiss city of Lucerne, police have said.

The killer, a 42-year-old man who had worked at the factory for 10 years, is among the dead.

Shooting broke out in the canteen at the Kronospan wood processing plant in the town of Menznau at around 09:00 (08:00 GMT).

A prosecution spokesperson said the shooting took place over a few minutes.

3. You may be ignoring the fact

that following compulsory military service they keep their guns at home. As such Switzerland has always held the record of being second only to the Russians for the speed at which they can mobilize their army.

The US has no such comparison.

5. Since Switzerland is such a hard target to attack, even the Nazis said oh leave them be.

Certainly the mountainous terrain might be the biggest reason why, but the Swiss readiness to mobilize quickly for defense is probably another.

13. The mountainous terrain and the fact that damn near everyone is armed

has not kept invaders out of Afghanistan.

21. Sad, isn't it?

The presence of so many guns is the BIG problem there. Chris Hayes had a wonderful segment on his show a few weeks ago and this was the major reason cited for the serious problems in Afghanistan. It was good to hear the voices of people from that region who knew what they were talking about, discussing gun violence that has further wrecked that country. If you can find that segment on his show's website, I recommend it to you. Very enlightening.

10. Oh, you mean like all those false comparisons between Sandy Hook and Switzerland?

Like how the swiss are all armed and things like this don't happen there because everyone is armed?

"Must have the precious"

12. They are false comparisons.

As I pointed out most of Switzerland's guns are in effect state owned. All countries have got their own home grown loonies : its just that the US seems to have a disproportionate number compounded by the ease of private gun ownership.

7. Yes, you seem confused

they go to work just like everybody else, they don't tote weapons around with them, like a buncha Klansman hillbillies. they don't have crazy NRA douche bags spewing venom.

just because their gun laws differ from ours, and not in a way you approve, you believe your free to mock their tragedies.

ffs grow up.

rest in peace to the Swiss victims of American style gun play

8. lmao

they need to grow up ?z
sure sounded like if anyone or anything was being mocked, it was the united states (specifically those who point to the swiss)... not the swiss or the tragedy itself.

kinda stretching on that one, dontcha think?

14. This from the article.

"Switzerland has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the world, with an estimated 2.3 million firearms owned by the country's eight million people, but such gun attacks are relatively rare.

All healthy Swiss men aged between 18 and 34 are obliged to do military service and all are issued with assault rifles or pistols which they are supposed to keep at home."

If only they had more guns.
