Source: Reuters

Guitarist Dan Toler, who played in the Allman Brothers Band in the late 1970s and 1980s, has died of Lou Gehrig's disease at his home in Sarasota, Florida, his manager said.

Toler died on Monday and was in his early 60s, the manager, Glen Halverson, said.

Toler and his late brother, drummer David "Frankie" Toler, played in several groups, including Dickey Betts & Great Southern.

Dan Toler was part of the Allman Brothers Band from 1979 to 1982 and was featured on the group's albums "Enlightened Rogues," "Reach for the Sky" and "Brothers of the Road."

1. Were getting older....

the bands of our youth have become the geriatric bands of our old age.

3. Not familiar with him, since I've only listened to earlier Allman Brothers--

but it's still sad to hear. RIP, Mr. Toler.

4. He was first call

Back in the day, Dan would stand in at Arista or Capricorn sessions when the (whoever) band's guitar player could not (ahem) make it.

He was fluid and great. ALS, one shitty way to go.

Damn.

on edit...
Dickie Betts is just one of the guys whose rent was paid by Dan

11. Enlightened Rogues is such an underrated album...

It was my favorite album in my college years, '79-'82,
and remains my favorite Brothers album to this day
(tied for first with Eat a Peach.)

For most southern rockers and Brothers fans, it is hardly
ever mentioned.

Get the CD (or MP3) and listen to the guitar work between
Dicky Betts and Dangerous Dan Toler. You won't be
dissappointed. Some of the solos are smokin'!

RIP to another brother....
