Chuck Grassley: Native American Juries Are Incapable Of Trying White People Fairly
Source: Think Progress
INDIANOLA, Iowa Republicans have offered a number of reasons why they oppose the Violence Against Women Act. Some think its unconstitutional. Others argue that its just a meaningless bill with a patriotic title.
On Wednesday, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) added a new one: Native Americans supposedly arent capable of holding fair trials.
Last week, Grassley was one of just 22 senatorsall Republican menwho voted against reauthorizing VAWA. During a town hall meeting in Indianola on Wednesday, a woman asked him to explain his vote. Grassley responded that the legislation is unconstitutional, a belief shared by at least five of his colleagues.
Since the Constitution guarantees citizens the right to a trial among a jury of peers, Grassley reasoned that white men would be deprived of their rights if those who were accused of violence against Native American women had to appear in a tribal court. On an Indian reservation, its going to be made up of Indians, right? Grassley said. So the non-Indian doesnt get a fair trial.

Shameless old fool.

Bet the idea of white juries trying black men never bothered him.
And clearly, women's rights to life, liberty, yaddayadda, never enter his mind at all.

And he said that with no awareness of the irony?
AND he's ok with the situation as it is? That tribal police csnt even ARREST a non-res guy? And meanwhile, fucking non-res guys KNOW this and therefore know that it's eady huntin over the border...but senator bigot wants to let the status quo remain rather than vote for a bill that intends to protect women?
Jeezus. H. Christ!!!

(9,688 posts)Grassley is a legislator and he's offering a clearly racist justification for his vote re. a legislation.
I'm not saying put him in jail. I'm saying his kind of reasoning should be grounds for impeachment, for his forcible removal from office.
If that kind of statement doesn't qualify, what does?

(992 posts)Is it 100% white, doubtful. What about the jury pool on a reservation? 100% Native-American, probably. Which pool is the least discriminatory? Where in the US can you find a 100% white jury pool?

(1,375 posts)A "jury of your peers" should mean you can only be judged by those of the same gender and ethnic background, or is a cultural thing? Maybe rapists, pedophiles and homophobes should only have other rapists, pedophiles and homophobes on their juries, we want a "fair" trial after all.

(50,254 posts)I still don't even get how he beat John Culver back in '78.
Some of it is regional demographics. Western IA is in the bag for crazies like Grassley and Steve King. Central/Eastern IA, where the big cities are located, are more liberal. That's not all of it though.
Bruce Braley is a liberal guy. I'm very proud to vote for him and have met him a few times at local gatherings in his honor. He's been elected/re-elected 4 times ('06, '08, '10, '12). Before Braley we had republican douche Jim Nussle, of whom it seemed we would NEVER(!) be rid. Well, Nussle ran for governor and Braley got his seat when the R brand was in the toilet in '06 (and Nussle lost the governorship to total zero Chet Culver for the same reason). My point is, I don't know that we would have ever gotten rid of Nussle had he not ran for governor. I sometimes wonder if we'd have ever gotten rid of Branstad had he not stepped down in '98 too. I feel like we'll never be rid of him again, as he has now been governor of my state for 18/19 years (he's on his fifth 4-year term). He's such a dork.

(5,763 posts)This doesn't even sound racist to Republicans. They're constantly making insults like this and then wonder why minorities don't like them.
I'm guessing that armed robbery or any other crime committed on a Reservation shouldn't be tried in tribal court, either?

(2,730 posts)making my point once again about who the Republican Party attracts. They don't believe in equality for other ethnic groups in America. If you are not a white male, you are a second class citizen. There is a different set of rules for women though. It is like a Pyramid and where you fit on the scale. That is the way they see society. Equality threatens that order.

(11,641 posts)There certainly is enough of these instances where if compiled it would put the GOP's ethics as an organization under a bright light for the American public.
The frequency of these type of blatantly racist remarks is alarming and disconcerting at best. I hold the GOP in contempt for their extremely poor leadership on important race related issues. They can not continue to make racist statements on an ongoing basis and then feel like they should not be held accountable for the moral decay that these remarks produce in America's society.
