Man who shot deputies found dead

Source: San Diego UT

ENCINITAS A 10-hour SWAT standoff ended early Thursday when a 22-year-old man who shot two sheriff's deputies was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his mother's Encinitas home, sheriff's officials said.

Robots were sent into the house at 1:30 a.m. to check on the suspect, and the SWAT team entered the residence eight minutes after that, sheriff's spokeswoman Melissa Aquino said.

Sheriff's Capt. Duncan Fraser earlier confirmed a media report that noises were heard from the house about 9:30 p.m., but it was not known if that is when the fatal shot was fired.

Authorities said the man was angry over a restraining order filed by his mother last week. He opened fire on the two deputies Wednesday afternoon, wounding the men and sparking the volatile standoff at the house.

6. It could be he is happy the shooter is dead.

I can't see much "good" in this story at all. Tragic all the way around.

4. why wouldn't they just burn the mutherfucker out?!

what a SHOCK that law enforcement would follow established protocol rather than just commence with tearing down walls and firing on him with pyro gas grenades, even after two of their brethren were shot by this guy.

5. Because he didn't have a sniper rifle or body armor and hadn't vowed to kill

as many police possible before dying himself? Because he hadn't killed anyone? Because he hadn't stalked the wives and children of police officers?

Also, they did use tear gas:

He continued to make threats, and the deputies fired tear gas. The suspect responded with gunfire, Fraser said.

11. The only natural response to tear gas is to kill yourself.

Silly.

7. Actually pretty remarkable.

SD Sheriff's Deputies have not exactly been models of restraint and following protocol.

8. i have been pleasantly surprised by the reaction of local law enforcement..

evidently they stopped a couple of suspected vehicles during the dorner incident without discharging any firearms. if you lived here in the 80s-90s then you know that they used to fire on anyone deemed even remotely threatening, whether those people were wielding tree stakes or trowels.

9. Lived here since 1980.

And yes, I can recall a time when I was a little nervous just being out in the front yard with gardening tools.

Thinking back, the Francine Busby fund-raiser debacle was the last time the locals went overboard.

I was really impressed with the way SDPD handled things during all our anti-war protests. They were even pretty decent during Occupy compared to a lot of other places.
