Mayor Reed says Olympic bid too costly for San Jose

Source: SJ Mercury News

The U.S. Olympic Committee sees San Jose as a potential contender for hosting the 2024 Summer Games.

But Mayor Chuck Reed said Wednesday that the race is just too rich for a city still struggling to keep its libraries open and cops on the beat.

"It takes billions of dollars to put on the Olympics," Reed told reporters Wednesday. "San Jose doesn't have billions to put into Olympic games."

Reed was among 35 mayors in large and interested American cities that the U.S. Olympic Committee sent letters to on Tuesday -- including San Francisco and Sacramento -- to gauge interest in bidding for the 2024 Olympic Summer Games.

I live in this city and think that my city needs to get its budget & other problems in order before it's able to host the Olympics. Otherwise events like the Olympics go to the big boys, San Francisco and Oakland. San Jose at least gets the NCAA basketball tournament!

would not be able to handle it. even if their finances were already in order .

5. I'm not a huge fan of the Olympics

I watch some of it, but the Summer games make me antsy because they always fall on our presidential election year. South Korea is hosting the winter games in 5 years and we plan to travel across the country to go to one event if possible.

4. I don't think most US cities can afford to host the US Olympic Games

Budgets are tight and the economy is only starting to pick up. I don't think the US will get the games in 2024. Maybe 15 years down the line in 2028. The last time we hosted the Summer Olympics was 1996 and the Winter Olympics in 2002.

6. It seems inevitable a US hosted games would be boycotted

Seeing as an enormous number of participants would inevitably be denied visas or turned away at the airport sparking an international backlash.
