Missouri bill would imprison legislators proposing gun control

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Rhiannon12866 (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

A Missouri lawmaker is proposing to send colleagues to prison for introducing gun control legislation — a plan even its sponsor acknowledges has no chance of passage.

Rep. Mike Leara, a St. Louis County Republican, said Tuesday that his bill is a statement of principle. It would make lawmakers guilty of a felony punishable by up to four years in prison if they introduce legislation restricting gun rights.

Rep. Stacey Newman, a St. Louis Democrat, called the measure “unconstitutional” and said she will go directly to prison if the bill passes. Newman is sponsoring a measure requiring guns to be sold by licensed dealers and forcing dealers to conduct background checks.

The proposal criminalizing gun control legislation comes as a Missouri House committee was scheduled to consider a Republican proposal that would nullify all federal gun laws.

Well, there's a compelling argument in support of gun rights...

1. How kind of Newman to call this "unconstitutional."

I'd be more likely to say it was the delusional ravings of someone dangerous to themselves and to others and who needs to be committed to a mental health institution for a period of observation and diagnosis.

But what do I know? I've only been married to a therapist for 26 years...

2. I suspect the Missouri Legislature has a rule about criticizing fellow members...

I'd hate to think that Rep Newman did something "irresponsible".

3. I thought gun rights were needed to protect our other freedoms

Like freedom of speech, assembly and the right to petition our government.

I don't get it.

Sounds like the 1830's when Congress banned anti-slavery petitions from even being introduced onto the floor.

20. Okay, so answer this question for me as well -

Citizens are being told that one reason they don't need this type of gun or that type of gun is this one: "You don't need that type of weaponry because this nation is not at war."

So why in the world, if it is so true our nation is not at war, are the damn police allowed to be dressed up like Star War Death Star soldiers, and weaponized to the max? Why are their numerous raids on homes for growing plants?

Why if we are truly "not at war" is that happening?

Interesting video right here - where citizens asking these types of questions are not actually answered by our supposed "elected officials":

21. I have long opposed the militarization of police forces

Having the police do military work and the military do police work is just asking for trouble.

13. Yeah but...

this was done in response to a proposal to ban all semi automatic guns (all, not just assault rifles) and make the local PD confiscate all semi automatic weapons within 3 months if they had not yet been turned in.

I live in the KC area and I can tell you we have a basket full of crazy around here.
