Fire burns at Kansas City shopping district

Source: AP

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A massive fire is burning in an upscale shopping and entertainment district in Kansas City.

Fire officials didn't immediately return a phone call seeking comment Tuesday evening, but television video shows flames shooting out of the Country Club Plaza.

Television video showed dozens of firefighters and other emergency responders battling a massive blaze through heavy smoke, and debris littering surrounding streets.

The shopping area was established in 1922 by J.C. Nichols. Based on the architecture of Seville, Spain, it includes retail, restaurants, apartments and offices.

1. Just drove by there. It's immense.

They are saying 7 or 8 injuries, some severe.

You can see the smoke for miles. This is a huge fire.

7. I just peeked and the reporter talked of a strong smell of gas

where he is, far away from the blaze. I'm surprised they haven't been able to shut the main down.

Apparently a line let loose and employees were able to get most people out before it blew.

15. Sly James says that the smell

has dissipated considerably.

When the mayor is on scene you know it's a big deal.

I don't know how far the evac zone is but I wouldn't worry too much.

22. I'm not greatly worried now, based on what I've seen....

She may have been temporarily evacuated from her apartment, but that's about the worst that I'd expect.

20. The smell is added so people can smell leaks.

Weather it smells like gas or the sulfer they add, the importance is detecting the leak.

21. Which is why they add the distinct smell to it.

Everyone knows that's what people are talking about.
