Detroit Review Team Finds 'Financial Emergency' In City
Source: WDIV-TV Detroit
DETROIT -According to the Michigan State Treasurer's Office, the six-member financial review team appointed in December to examine the city of Detroits finances has unanimously determined that a local government financial emergency currently exists in the city, and no satisfactory plan is in place to resolve it.
"This review team spent two months pouring over the citys finances, taking careful
consideration of both long and short-term issues, including recent actions by the administration and City Council, said State Treasurer Andy Dillon, a member of the six-person panel. While we appreciate the steps the city has taken over the past number of weeks, key reform measures have not occurred quickly enough, if at all. The team collectively believes the city needs assistance in making the difficult decisions necessary to achieve the significant reforms that are so crucial to the citys long-term viability."

Each member of the Review Team came into this process with an open mind, and no preconceptions. However, it became clear as we moved forward, that the city continues to struggle mightily beneath the weight of chronic deficits and its long-term liabilities, said Ronald Goldsberry, an independent consultant and one of Governor Snyders appointees to the Review Team. Add to the mix a city governance structure that resists meaningful, structural change, and you have what we have deemed to be a financial emergency.
Under PA 72, the Governor now has 30 days to review the report and make a determination on whether or not a financial emergency exists in the City.

"Emergency Manager" pending if the governor can find anyone to take the job. Sadly, considering the buffoons on the Detroit City council...it is probably for the best.

(23,199 posts)And a financial windfall for those who suck up to him. The financial manager will make $300,000 plus, they'll sell off the city to FOS (friends of Snyder) and leave nothing behind. Belle Isle? Gone. Any available riverfront property? Gone. Parks, water dept., museums? Gone Gone Gone.

(78,249 posts)Last time we had an emergency manager thread, a Detroit DUer suggested that Mayor Bing might be a good choice for the position. My response: "Do you really think there's a chance in hell that it's going to be him, or anyone like him?"

(78,249 posts)but even if the EM is African American, it'll likely be someone from outside Detroit: Robert Bobb, who served in a similar role in the Detroit school system, has been mentioned.

(9,893 posts)That's why I thought that he would be a good choice.
For the record, I'm not from Detroit, but I am from Michigan originally.

(12 posts)Unfortunately this is a grand experiment for the rest of the nation and it may be occurring in your own county under your nose, Here in my county the board, loaded with cronies,
executed a coupe de taut by creating an administrator unelected position. This admin has total power just like these takeovers in Michigan but totally under the radar. We who know about it are preparing to act. I think this is taking place all over the country mostly in red counties right now but it will expand. If you are aware of this, please post. As it sits now the admin edits the minutes, is in total charge of who is fired and who is not, which parcel of land that can be auctioned off, what department is destroyed and we are losing access to public documents. This is not what democracy looks like.
