Concealed weapons on college campuses would be banned under a bill passed Monday in the Colorado House, legislation part of a Democratic gun control package that cleared the House the same day.

House Bill 1226, which bans concealed weapons on public college campuses, passed the House on a 34-31 vote, with three Democrats voting no.

Democrats argued guns and college students don't mix and that campuses are some of the safest places in America.

"There are a lot of students who simply are not ready to be in the presence of firearms," said Rep. Claire Levy, D-Boulder, the sponsor of the bill. "It's a dangerous mix."

8. dems control both houses and the governorship here

although Hickenlooper is a moderate, and has said some dems will be disappointed in this moderatation. Although these bills look like they will pass, and be signed.

26. So why didn't they even consider an Assault Weapon Ban?

looks like they are just nibbling around the edges to say they did something without confronting the hard issues.

12. RECOMMENDATION!!!!!!!!

The bills again are:

House Bill 1229 requiring background checks for all gun transactions;

House Bill 1226 banning concealed weapons on campuses;

House Bill 1228 instituting a fee for gun buyers to cover the cost of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to perform background checks; and

House Bill 1224 limiting magazines to 15 rounds.

22. And yet this is controversial.

It boggles the mind. What is in this group of bills that has gun owners so upset? Most gun owners already buy guns through dealers that require a background check and it doesn't seem to adversely impact their ability to obtain all of the guns that their trigger-happy hearts desire. Do gun owners, who have been getting by just fine for centuries without high capacity magazines, now feel that they are unable to enjoy their guns unless they can fire 50+ rounds without having to change out magazines? Why are these infinitesimally tiny things worth fighting so fanatically over? I can only assume that they're buying into the NRA's deranged brainwashing that Obama is coming to take their guns away, a paranoia so completely contradicted by reality, it renders it all but impossible to have a rational conversation with persons so deluded.

20. gun owners as victims

PBS Newshour just finished an excellent report from Denver on the gun control legislation in the Colorado House today. We have come a long way and have a hard road ahead. It is still sad and frustrating that gun owners in Colorado and even more in other states continue to see themselves as victims being persecuted by the majority who want reasonable restrictions on gun ownership. That a gun owner could ever use a parody on the great quote from German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer to show that we all want to take away his hunting rifle and his constitutional rights is stupid and offensive.

"First they came for the Communists but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Socialists and Trade Unionists but I was neither so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Jews but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out. And when they came for me there was no one left to speak for me."

21. Our VP personally made calls to some CO lawmakers.

Whike on vacation in CO, he talked to some in the CO House. Repubs are crying about it but I'm happy he got involved and this and the ban on large capacity catridges passed. It's only the beginning...and Repubs just love their states rights when it's something they want.

23. "Campuses are some of the safest places in America"?!?!?

I'm not saying students should be armed, but with all the rape going on at universities, "safe" is definitely not the word to describe campuses. Safe for date rapists and jocks, maybe, but certainly not for young women.

24. just thinking about how INSANE this world has become

when i was growing up there used to be unwritten rules of thumb society followed such as:
1. you DON'T bring a gun to school
2. you DON'T bring a gun to a restaurant
3. you DON'T bring a gun to the grocery store
4. you DON'T bring a gun to church
5. you DON'T bring a gun to a family reunion, birthday party, funeral
6. you DON'T bring a gun to go see a movie
etc.

and now there has to be a VOTE on what was once practical, sensible, and safe behavior that was socially accepted as the norm. what the fuck is wrong with people? what the hell happened? it's so bizarre.

"i grow veary of this world"

25. Very true. We have laws and enforcement because common sense does not prevail

in public all the time. We have locks on doors because some people are disrespectful assholes. And we need gun control laws to protect us from those who are irresponsible. It's as simple as that. It really is an indictment of human nature. But it is possible to live a fulfilling life within the boundaries of laws that enforce what we already consider to be common sense.
