Obama’s Plan Sees 8-Year Wait for Illegal Immigrants

WASHINGTON — A plan by President Obama for an overhaul of the immigration system would put illegal immigrants on a path to citizenship that could begin after about eight years and would require them to go to the back of the line behind legal applicants, according to a draft of the legislation that the White House has circulated in the administration.

The draft plan says none of the 11 million illegal immigrants currently in the country would be granted permanent resident status and given a document known as a green card until the earlier of two dates: either eight years after the bill is enacted or 30 days after visas have been given to everyone who applied legally.

The plan includes a shortened path to citizenship for young illegal immigrants who came to the United States as children, said an administration official who agreed to discuss the details only on the condition of anonymity. In many cases, those young people could apply for green cards as soon as two years after the law was passed.

The disclosure of the document’s existence, by USA Today on Saturday, set off a series of political recriminations and questions on Sunday about Mr. Obama’s promise to allow bipartisan Congressional talks to take precedence. The furor also offered new evidence that Republicans could use the president’s direct involvement as a reason to reject a potential compromise.

Let me get this straight. Rick Rubio unveals a plan that looks like President Obama's proposed immigration plan from 2011. The Senate Bi-Partisan group then releases the same plan, which again looks like President Obama's plan. Then, President Obama circulates a plan that looks much like his original plan, and Republicans then attack him for poisoning the well and use that as an excuse for not supporting the plan that they themselves proposed. Worse, the media falls for this B.S.

It seems like the whole point of this exercise is for Republicans to score points with the Hispanic community for proposing an immigration plan, then blaming President Obama for not supporting their own plan. Sound familiar? Also, it also allows folks like Rick Rubio to avoid voting for "amnesty" so that they are not toast during the Republican primaries. It is so transparent, yet the media willingly goes along for the gag.

1. I know of people who have been waiting over 25 years to get in.

If they are saying 8 years that's actually pretty good.

2. I Think The Issue Is That Republicans Are Getting Bent Out Of Shape...

...about the fact that they have essentially proposed the same immigration plan that President Obama has proposed with a few cosmetic tweaks. Thus, they yell long and hard about the President's plan being DOA when it pretty much the same plan they have now embraced with some differences in terms of wait times and some BS border security language designed to provide a fig leaf to Republicans to protect them from the more strident portions of their base.

3. The Republicans are running around like chickens without heads.

It's unbecoming.

I wish we had a serious opposition party so that at least this debate didn't look like such a joke.
