Vatican raises possibility of early March conclave

Source: AP

VATICAN CITY (AP) The Vatican raised the possibility Saturday that the conclave to elect the next pope might start sooner than March 15, the earliest date possible under current rules that require a 15 to 20 day waiting period after the papacy becomes vacant.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said that Vatican rules on papal succession are open to interpretation and that "this is a question that people are discussing."

"It is possible that church authorities can prepare a proposal to be taken up by the cardinals on the first day after the papal vacancy" to move up the start of the conclave, he said.

The 15 to 20 day waiting period is in place to allow time for all cardinals who don't live in Rome to arrive, under the usual circumstance of a pope dying. But in this case the cardinals already know that this pontificate will end Feb. 28, with the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, and therefore can get to Rome in plenty of time to take part in the conclave, Lombardi said.

"Quick, let's do this before any in-depth investigations can be done on the new guy!"

2. I think the point you raise is a very fair one.

I do know that a few names have been tossed out over there, but I don't know if anyone has a handle on what the "Powers That Be" (I find that term exasperating)
are thinking, if anyone has an inside track, or if this whole conclave is gonna be a crap shoot.

Of course, since we know the guy is resigning, it's almost like he died a week ago, so the whole sense of moving the timeline really isn't out of line. The only thing they don't have to deal with is planning the funeral. Yet, anyway.

I liked Bill Maher's idea of putting Hillary in the job....or "POprah."

7. The Cardinal enclave

has been packed with what is for all intents and purposes Ratzinger appointees over the years preceding his Cheney style ascension. Less time probably means less opportunity to organize a "rebellion" as if many of the cardinals have that kind of gumption anyway. Curia plus living Ratzinger plus bums' rush seem to indicate more Babylonian Captivity for the very spirit of progress in the Church. Much of it to serve demeaning ends of unChrist-like power, cover up and repression.

I don't want to compare this to OUR political games in the great and powerful USA(except for the Cheney bit) but this seems the general nauseous state of world "leadership" despite and against democratization.

Which the media will fawn over generally as it also goes after the scandal angle. Babylon will rejoice.

8. They should just rewrite the rules while they got a pope now.

Just lower the time period when the pope resigns to a five day waiting period. They all know who they are pulling for in the conclave.
