In Memoriam: Christopher Hitchens, 1949–2011
Christopher Hitchens—the incomparable critic, masterful rhetorician, fiery wit, and fearless bon vivant—died today at the age of 62. Hitchens was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in the spring of 2010, just after the publication of his memoir, Hitch-22, and began chemotherapy soon after. His matchless prose has appeared in Vanity Fair since 1992, when he was named contributing editor.
“Cancer victimhood contains a permanent temptation to be self-centered and even solipsistic,” Hitchens wrote nearly a year ago in Vanity Fair, but his own final labors were anything but: in the last 12 months, he produced for this magazine a piece on U.S.-Pakistani relations in the wake of Osama bin Laden’s death, a portrait of Joan Didion, an essay on the Private Eye retrospective at the Victoria and Albert Museum, a prediction about the future of democracy in Egypt, a meditation on the legacy of progressivism in Wisconsin, and a series of frank, graceful, and exquisitely written essays in which he chronicled the physical and spiritual effects of his disease. At the end, Hitchens was more engaged, relentless, hilarious, observant, and intelligent than just about everyone else—just as he had been for the last four decades.

He was an extraordinarily talented writer. He spent his life writing on behalf of bad causes. I consider him equivalent to Leni Reifenstal, the Nazi propagandist. He went from Trotskyite in his early career (despicable as that is) to right wing war monger.

89. Ahmad Chalabi
|
Hitchens formed his early opinions using information given to him by his friend, one lying-ass bastard named Ahmad Chalabi who the CIA won't even believe anymore.
I think this colored his thinking on the issue overall. Couple that with his extremely strong stance against totalitariansim, and I can see the reason for his support. It is possible to disagree and remain civil, and even understand the reasons of those you disagree with. |

No, this 'jewish look' didn't start with the Nazi's; for example: Dickens wrote about it -- 1800's English courts wrote about it -- 1700's Shakespeare wrote about it -- 1600's Now, it's very true they were pretty much all speaking about Ashkenazi Jews/Ashkenazim, which were by far the most populous in Europe, hence common ethnicity. As for me, I'm done hijacking this thread; and still, good luck with that. |

|
The criterion for deciding who to send this to became:
Who did he offend, and there was plenty to go around:: He was an atheist and attacker of Mother Teresa and I think JP2 and author of “God Is Not Great”; formerly a TROTSKYite who later supported the wars on the Falklands and Iraq; attacker on Bill CLINTON and snitch who almost got Sid BLUMENTHAL charged with perjury over LEWINSKY; smoker and boozer (died at 62 yesterday of esophageal cancer) and refused to deathbed-convert/repent. You can decide which facet of offensiveness applies to (addressing my friends: ) you. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/16/arts/christopher-hitchens-is-dead-at-62-obituary.html |

One thing that could never be said about Hitchens was that his positions weren't thoroughly thought through. Whether you agreed with them or not (and in other areas, I often didn't), it was refreshing to read such a clearly-stated argument, and you usually had to work to strengthen your own positions in response. That's how the evolution of ideas is supposed to work.

45. From Galloway vs. Hitchens Debating the War in Iraq, 2005
|
AMY GOODMAN: Ok. Christopher Hitchens, when do you think the U.S. troops should leave Iraq?
CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS: I think I can be as precise, though perhaps not as terse, as Mr. Galloway on this point. I should thank him, by the way, for eliciting or allowing me to elicit or you, ladies and gentlemen, to elicit from him what I feared, but didn’t hope. In other words a full declaration of support for the campaign of sabotage and murder and beheading that has taken the lives of brave journalists, demolished — demolished the offices — demolished the offices of the United Nations. GEORGE GALLOWAY: Are there no depths to which you will not sink? CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS: Demolished the offices of the United Nations and the Red Cross in Baghdad, shot down senior clerics outside their places of worship and continues as a campaign of mayhem to this day. It will be — GEORGE GALLOWAY: Are there no depths to which you will not sink? You’ve fallen out of the gutter into the sewer. CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS: You might all care to remember — GEORGE GALLOWAY: You’ve fallen out of the gutter into the sewer. |

He agreed with PNAC and other neo-cons on the Iraq War, along with, sadly, the majority of Congress. He defended the atrocities of Abu Ghraib, and, in common with every Republican of the time, hated the Clintons. None of those things constitute fighting impossible odds. In fact, they come closer to sticking his finger in the air to see which way the wind was blowing.
And, his fighting against impossible odds at his death is something he has in common with everyone who dies of terminal cancer...or any terminal disease...or by the weapons used to murder Iraqis in the war he argued for. |
