Collins says she will oppose Hagel’s confirmation

Source: AP

BY BY RICHARD LARDNER

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Susan Collins says she will oppose the confirmation of Chuck Hagel to become President Barack Obama’s secretary of defense.

Collins, a moderate Republican from Maine who had been seen as a possible supporter of Hagel, said Wednesday that his views on the most critical threats facing the United States are “unsettling.”

Collins said in a statement that Hagel was unwilling to ask the European Union to designate Hezbollah a terrorist organization in 2006, and he has been hesitant to back the use of all non-military options, such as unilateral sanctions, to pressure Iran into ceasing its nuclear program.

Collins said she would not join in a filibuster to block a final vote.

The Senate Armed Services Committee voted 14-11 on Tuesday to send Hagel’s nomination to the full Senate.

16. She Is Clearly Worried About Being Primaried

And she doesn't want to go the route of Olympia Snowe so she is attempting to protect her backside here. While this may work to head off a primary challenge it puts her at risk in the general.

6. So, if she will not join in on the filibuster does this mean she will vote for cloture?

All we need is her cloture vote.

After we get 60 votes for cloture then we will have enough dems to get to 50 for the confirmation vote without the GOPers.

18. I thought the "new rules" meant one vote less was needed. i.e. 41 against cloture.

7. can she be bought?

maybe throw some pork Maine's way? We're a tiny state with zero influence. The only way we stay afloat is by bribery. I think that's why we had the GOP twins for so long....

8. A State that would elect LaPage, with even a minority, Has some serious problems.

I know the demographics are changing slowly, but she still cultivates the ignorant voter. You never really know where she stands on the issues. We need another Muskie.

12. The problem is we have multi-candidate races & no run-off provision. That can change soon. (Read On)

Contact your state reps and tell them to support the bill to allow ranked choice instant runoff voting. That would solve the problem of an asshole like LeBUFFOON getting into office in Maine.

13. As far as I'm concerned...

she's always been a pain in the ass, along with Olympia Snowe. They both specialized in making Dems think they would vote for a bill if only this or that was changed. After the change was made, which usually meant the bill was watered down, they refused to vote for it on some dumb piece of crap excuse. And when Snowe announced she was retiring, she had the gall to say that Obama wouldn't compromise with the Republicans, and wouldn't even talk to her, and she was just tired of the whole thing. This is just more of the same...I'm sure she was just fine with Hagel when he was stumping for McCain, and thought the idea of McCain making him Sec. of Defense was brilliant. I'm also willing to bet she'll join a filibuster.
